The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has introduced Xceler8, a three-month virtual accelerator programme intended to help Nigerian innovators turn working prototypes into commercially viable businesses. The initiative was announced during a media event at the NASENI Innovation Hub in Abuja and is being implemented in partnership with AfriLabs, Africa's largest network of technology and innovation hubs. It is designed for founders who have already moved beyond the idea stage and can demonstrate real customer traction.
Addressing the Commercialisation Gap
NASENI Executive Vice Chairman Khalil Suleiman Halilu observed that Nigeria has no shortage of talented engineers and scientists, but many promising solutions remain stuck between the laboratory and the market. He explained that the real test of innovation is whether an idea can become a product, solve a real problem, attract investment and create jobs. Xceler8 therefore focuses on commercialisation and scale rather than early-stage ideation, targeting innovators with functional prototypes or live commercial products.
Programme Structure and Financial Support
The first cohort will select 25 post-minimum viable product innovators from across Nigeria, and each selected participant will receive acceleration support valued at up to $25,000. The programme will deliver business development support, technical mentorship, market access guidance, product refinement assistance and investor-readiness training. It will be conducted virtually, while the strongest ventures will have the opportunity to pitch their solutions to investors, industry leaders and policymakers at a physical Demo Day in Abuja.
Implementation Partnership and Cohort Targets
AfriLabs is serving as the implementing partner, bringing a network of more than 540 innovation hubs across 54 African countries to help connect participants with mentors, investors and corporate partners. The agency expects 100 post-MVP innovators to participate across four cohorts over the next year, with Xceler8 acting as the commercialisation engine within NASENI's broader innovation ecosystem. It forms part of a structured pathway that runs from HatchBox through the NASENI Innovation Hub to the NASENI Campus for industrial opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Window
Applicants must be Nigerian citizens aged between 15 and 40 years, residing in Nigeria and operating a registered Nigerian company. They must have a functional prototype or commercially available product in sectors such as agrotech, renewable energy, fintech, edtech, healthtech or manufacturing, and evidence of at least five paid transactions. Applications are open from August 31, 2026, to September 30, 2026, through the official NASENI innovation portal.
Strategic Goals and Economic Impact
NASENI expects the first cohort to accelerate 25 startups, create at least 100 direct and indirect jobs, foster five strategic partnerships and measurably improve the commercial readiness of participating companies. Across the broader programme, the agency aims to accelerate 100 innovators, refine 100 minimum viable products and create at least 400 direct and indirect jobs over four cohorts. The initiative is positioned as an investment in Nigeria's industrialisation, helping local solutions generate intellectual property, jobs and investment opportunities.
Xceler8 represents a deliberate effort to strengthen the connection between science, engineering, industry and economic development in Nigeria. By offering structured support without requiring equity at the outset, the programme provides a practical route for early revenue generating startups to access mentorship, funding opportunities and investor networks. Its success will likely be measured by the number of market-ready ventures, jobs created and partnerships formed in the coming year.
