The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has announced a significant equity investment of ₹225 crore, approximately $23 million, into NDR Smart Spaces Private Limited. This strategic funding is earmarked for the development of a vast network of Grade A warehousing and logistics infrastructure across India. The partnership aims to bolster the nation's supply chain capabilities and support its continued economic expansion.
Strategic Expansion into Underserved Markets
The investment will fuel the development of a 20 million square foot pipeline of modern logistics facilities across 14 cities, with 8 million square feet already under construction. NDR Smart Spaces will strategically focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. These regions have been historically underserved by modern logistics infrastructure, presenting a significant opportunity for growth and modernization.
Fostering Economic Growth and Job Creation
A primary objective of this collaboration is substantial job creation, with projections indicating the development will generate around 24,000 direct employment opportunities. These roles will span logistics, operations, maintenance, and management, providing a significant boost to local economies. The initiative also emphasizes inclusive employment, building on the NDR Group's existing workforce which includes up to 4,000 women in its operations.
Addressing Food Waste with Cold Storage Solutions
A critical component of the project involves adding 1.5 million square feet of advanced cold storage capacity to the national grid. This development directly addresses India's significant post-harvest food losses, which are estimated to be between 25 to 30 percent for fruits and vegetables. By improving the cold chain, the initiative will support farmers' incomes and enhance food security for consumers nationwide.
A Partnership for Sustainable and Efficient Logistics
The new facilities will be constructed to the Advanced EDGE green building standard, targeting a 40 percent reduction in energy use and 20 percent in water consumption. This commitment to sustainability aligns with India's National Logistics Policy, which aims to reduce the country's high logistics costs from 14 percent of GDP. The expansion of efficient, green warehousing is expected to improve supply chain performance and open new markets for businesses.
Leadership Perspectives on the Investment
Amrutesh Reddy, Director at NDR Smart Spaces, hailed the investment as a significant milestone that strengthens their capacity to develop high-quality infrastructure at scale. IFC representatives, including Vikram Kumar, emphasized that the partnership aims to build a world-leading logistics platform. They highlighted its potential to carry the weight of India's growth, create formal employment, and connect farmers to markets.
This ₹225 crore investment by the IFC in NDR Smart Spaces represents a pivotal step towards modernizing India's logistics sector. The partnership is set to deliver a powerful combination of economic growth, widespread job creation, and enhanced food security through sustainable infrastructure. Ultimately, this collaboration strongly supports India's ambition to build a more efficient, resilient, and globally competitive supply chain ecosystem.
