Berlin-based vertical AI startup mika has raised €6 million in a seed funding round to advance its AI-native financial operating system for small German limited companies. The round was led by Smedvig Ventures and supported by new and existing investors, including Wecken & Cie, Keen Venture Partners and Dutch Founders Fund. The new capital will support growth and further development of mika’s platform for GmbHs and UGs.

Rebuilding Accounting and Tax for Small Businesses

Germany has almost one million small incorporated businesses, most of them GmbHs and UGs, which must maintain accounts and submit tax filings. Many small companies rely on tax advisers because the rules are complex and mistakes can trigger back taxes or penalties. Mika is rebuilding accounting, tax and finance from the ground up as an AI-native financial operating system for SMEs.

An AI-Native General Ledger

At the core of the platform is an AI-native general ledger developed specifically for German accounting. The technology reads receipts and payments, applies different AI models depending on the task, and embeds domain knowledge and accounting rules developed by mika. It categorises transactions, records them and explains individual entries to users, with trained in-house accountants stepping in when human involvement is needed.

Conversational Access and Tax Office Letters

Users can query their financial information directly inside mika or through standard AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude using the Model Context Protocol. The platform can explain correspondence from tax authorities and answer questions about company accounts and finances. Individual tax advice is not yet part of the service, so mika works with licensed tax advisers from its network for such matters.

Funding and Investor Support

The seed round was led by Smedvig Ventures, with participation from Wecken & Cie and angel investors such as Dennis Bemmann and Michael Brehm. Existing investors Keen Venture Partners and Dutch Founders Fund also increased their stakes after a 2024 pre-seed round of €800,000 led by Samen Slimmer. Freddie Kalfayan of Smedvig Ventures said German accounting and tax requirements are uniquely demanding for small businesses, and that mika is the first to build for this reality.

Market Traction and Growth

Founded in 2022 and realigned under new management in 2024, mika is led by founder and CEO Agnieszka Walorska with CFO Luke Linnekuhle and CTO Henry Müssemann. Its customer count grew from around 400 GmbHs and UGs at the start of the year to more than 750, while revenue climbed by more than 20 percent every month and annual revenue passed €1 million. The company began with agencies and consultancies, then expanded into SaaS, property, e-commerce, retail and skilled trades.

A Founder’s Perspective on Access

Founder and CEO Agnieszka Walorska said that the moment someone starts a GmbH in Germany, they are told they need a tax adviser, and some founders even think it is a legal requirement. She described mika’s mission as using AI to tear down that barrier so that bank balance or family background no longer decides who can start a company. This perspective underpins the startup’s effort to offer an affordable alternative to traditional tax firms.

With the new funding, mika plans to continue expanding its customer base and improving its financial operating system for small German companies. The growth from around 400 to more than 750 customers in a year suggests that its AI-driven approach is resonating with founders who want greater control over accounting and tax processes. As regulatory complexity remains a burden for small businesses, mika positions itself as a practical alternative to traditional tax advisory services.
