Motorola Solutions has acquired DeepNeuronic, a Covilhã-based developer of artificial intelligence video analytics, in a transaction advised by Young America Capital. The deal transfers 100% of the Portuguese company's share capital, including its Brazilian subsidiary, to the global video security provider. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the acquisition will integrate DeepNeuronic's software into Motorola Solutions' Avigilon platform.
Academic Origins and Early Traction
DeepNeuronic was founded in 2021 by Vasco Lopes and Bruno Degardin, who met at the University of Beira Interior and earned PhDs in artificial intelligence and computer vision. The two founders developed software that reads live camera feeds and flags incidents as they happen, an approach that attracted early commercial interest from organizations seeking faster threat detection. Highway operators, airports, manufacturers, and retailers in Portugal and Brazil already run the technology on their existing cameras.
Technology Built for Real-Time Incident Detection
The company's core capability lies in applying computer vision to live video streams without requiring customers to replace their camera infrastructure. The software identifies potential security events and alerts operators in real time, reducing reliance on continuous manual monitoring and helping teams respond before situations escalate. This practical focus helped DeepNeuronic build a paying customer base across several sectors before the acquisition.
Expanding the Avigilon Platform
Motorola Solutions will build DeepNeuronic's technology into Avigilon, its video security platform that serves customers in more than 100 countries. The integration is expected to enhance Avigilon's analytics capabilities with advanced detection tools that work on cameras already installed, helping clients improve security without major hardware upgrades. Motorola Solutions identified the Portuguese company as a strategic complement to its existing security and video management portfolio.
Cross-Border Advisory and Legal Support
Young America Capital advised DeepNeuronic's founders through the sale, with Ran Zfoni, Vice President and Head of Israel & Europe Tech at YAC, leading the engagement. Peter Formanek, Founder and CEO of YAC, said the founders had a product customers were already paying for and a clear view of where video analytics was going. Cuatrecasas served as legal counsel to DeepNeuronic, led by partner Vasco Bivar de Azevedo.
Team Remains in Covilhã
All 17 DeepNeuronic employees will join Motorola Solutions and remain based in Covilhã, preserving the company's technical expertise and regional presence. Zfoni noted that the founders wanted a buyer that could scale the technology and would keep the team together in Covilhã, a condition that shaped the transaction. Motorola Solutions met that requirement, ensuring continuity for the team and its existing customers.
Strategic Fit in a Competitive Market
DeepNeuronic's founders had a commercially proven product and a clear view of where video analytics was heading, according to YAC. The acquisition reflects rising demand for AI tools that can monitor live video and reduce manual security workloads across transportation, aviation, manufacturing, and retail. Motorola Solutions can now offer more advanced incident detection to a wider set of customers through Avigilon and its global channel.
The acquisition of DeepNeuronic highlights how established security technology providers are seeking specialized AI capabilities developed by smaller teams. By welcoming the Portuguese company's 17 employees and retaining its Covilhã base, Motorola Solutions is positioning Avigilon for broader adoption in markets that require real-time video intelligence. The transaction, while undisclosed in value, marks another step in the consolidation of advanced video analytics within global security platforms, and it underscores the growing role of European academic talent in commercial AI applications.
