AI chip startup Etched has secured a monumental $700 million in funding, catapulting its valuation to an impressive $21 billion. The round was led by quantitative trading giant Jane Street, which also received the company's first-ever server rack. This dual role as lead investor and inaugural customer underscores the high stakes and significant confidence in Etched's mission to reshape AI inference.


A Specialized Approach to AI Inference

Founded in 2022 by Harvard dropouts, Etched is developing an ASIC chip named Sohu, specifically for running Transformer models. Unlike general-purpose GPUs from Nvidia, Sohu hardcodes Transformer computations directly onto the silicon for maximum efficiency. This specialized design sacrifices versatility but promises a massive leap in performance for a critical class of AI workloads.

The company claims its 8-chip server can generate over 500,000 tokens per second on large language models, dwarfing the output of equivalent Nvidia H100 systems. This performance is achieved through a two-stage optimization process and custom interconnects that significantly reduce latency. Etched's strategy involves delivering a complete, vertically integrated rack system, bypassing the need for customers to use Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem.

Scrutiny Amidst Rapid Growth

Etched's valuation has soared from approximately $5 billion to $21 billion in under a year, attracting both top-tier investors and significant skepticism. Critics have pointed to the company's focus on marketing and founder narratives over transparent technical data. The absence of independent, third-party benchmarks for its Sohu hardware has fueled doubts within the technical community about its performance claims.

Observers have also noted a shift in the company's core selling point, from raw speed to performance-per-watt, without public acknowledgment. While this evolution is common for semiconductor startups, it raises questions about the initial performance claims. All publicly available performance data originates from Etched itself, leaving the industry to await external validation of its ambitious promises.

The Jane Street Endorsement

The involvement of Jane Street serves as a powerful, albeit complex, endorsement for Etched's technology. As a leading quantitative trading firm with extreme demands for low-latency inference, its decision to invest after testing the hardware is a significant vote of confidence. This move suggests the Sohu chip delivers a tangible performance advantage for at least one highly demanding, real-world application.

However, Jane Street's dual role as both lead investor and sole confirmed customer complicates the narrative. While the delivery of a single rack proves the hardware is functional, it does not confirm its viability for mass production or its appeal to a broader market. The overlap between investor and client makes it challenging to gauge objective commercial traction from this initial deployment.


Etched stands at a critical juncture, armed with substantial capital and a landmark valuation but facing the immense challenge of scaling its operations. The company's vertically integrated strategy is a bold attempt to carve out a niche in a market dominated by Nvidia. Ultimately, its $21 billion valuation will be justified only if it can transition from delivering a single rack to mass-producing stable, high-performance systems for a wider range of customers.
