Defense Unicorns, a leading provider of airgap software delivery solutions for national security, has officially announced the completion of a $136 million Series B financing round. Led by Bain Capital’s Tech Opportunities fund, this investment elevates the San Antonio-based company to unicorn status with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. This financial milestone follows a period of rapid expansion, during which the firm reported a 300% year-over-year increase in the adoption of its technologies across various military systems.

Scaling the Software Backbone of the Military

The primary objective of this new capital is to scale the secure delivery of modern software to the most challenging environments faced by the U.S. Department of War. Defense Unicorns’ flagship platform, the Unicorn Delivery Service (UDS), provides an airgap-native runtime environment that allows mission-critical updates to be deployed to submarines, aircraft, and forward operating bases. By enabling rapid updates in disconnected settings, the company addresses a vital infrastructure gap that has historically left frontline warfighters operating with outdated technology.

Expanding Product Innovation and Partnerships

As part of its growth strategy, the company is advancing several strategic products, including the newly launched UDS Registry and UDS Army. The UDS Registry serves as a secure, American-maintained software supply chain solution, while UDS Army simplifies the path for commercial vendors to bring their innovations to the field via pre-authorized cloud environments. These tools are designed to integrate both open-source and commercial dual-use technologies into a unified ecosystem that supports the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force, and Space Force.

Strategic Backing and Executive Vision

The funding round saw significant participation from a diverse group of investors, including Ansa Capital, Sapphire Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners, as well as former CIA Director David H. Petraeus. CEO Dr. Rob Slaughter emphasized that making software a "strategic deterrent" is essential for maintaining a technological edge in modern mission environments. Bain Capital Partner Dewey Awad echoed this sentiment, noting that the platform plays a vital role in improving the readiness and resilience of service members through rapidly deployable and secure mission systems.

Defense Unicorns has successfully positioned itself as a foundational architect for the digital modernization of national security operations. By bridging the gap between advanced commercial software and the rigid security requirements of the military, the company is ensuring that technological superiority remains a constant in the field. This landmark Series B round not only secures the company's financial future but also reinforces its mission to empower those who protect the nation with the most advanced digital tools available.
