Canva is cutting or changing 1,271 roles, or 22% of its workforce. Chief Executive Melanie Perkins announced the change to staff. The online design company will merge teams and shift product roles to Sydney.

Support for departing staff

Affected staff will receive at least six months of salary, including statutory entitlements. Canva will also remove the one-year vesting cliff for people hired in the past year. Departing workers can keep their MacBook and access career coaching, interview preparation, and LinkedIn Premium.

Company context

Canva has operated for 13 years, and its growth slowed for the first time in a decade. The company has teams across 37 countries and serves hundreds of millions of users. Perkins wrote that small changes would not be enough for the next chapter.

A leaner operating model

Canva will merge Product, Growth, and Platform into one Product Org. It will reduce subspecialization and consolidate overlapping responsibilities. Sydney will become the primary base for product roles, and hybrid staff will be in the office 2 to 3 days a week from January.

Impacted staff will meet with senior leaders to discuss next steps. Canva plans an all-hands on November 10 and org-level sessions on November 11. Departing staff can register for US$10,000 Collective Fund grants through December 14.
