Watu Uganda has achieved a significant milestone by financing one million smartphones through its Watu Simu program, marking a major step in enhancing digital inclusion across the nation. This achievement underscores the growing demand for accessible digital tools among Ugandans seeking to participate in the digital economy. The company commemorated this landmark accomplishment at a celebratory event in Kampala, joined by key partners and stakeholders.

Accelerating Digital Access

The Watu Simu initiative enables customers to acquire a smartphone with a small down payment, followed by manageable installment plans. This model makes modern technology accessible to individuals like boda riders, small business owners, and students who rely on these devices for their livelihood. For many, the phone serves as an essential tool for processing payments, connecting with customers, and managing daily operations.

The program's growth has been remarkably swift, reflecting its widespread appeal and effectiveness in the market. After financing 500,000 devices by 2025, Watu Uganda doubled this figure to one million in less than a year, reaching the milestone in July 2026. This rapid expansion was further highlighted by the financing of over 250,000 devices in the first half of 2026 alone.

Strategic Partnerships and Network Expansion

The celebration event highlighted the collaborative efforts behind this success, with key partners in attendance. Dignitaries included executives from Airtel Money Uganda, Samsung Uganda, and the Microfinance Regulatory Authority, all of whom share a commitment to digital inclusion. Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Money Uganda, commended Watu for creating greater access to essential digital tools for Ugandans.

Watu's extensive operational network has been crucial to this growth, now comprising over 300 dealer partners and 29 branches nationwide. Damien Gueroult, Watu Uganda's Country Manager, emphasized that this expansion is a direct response to strong consumer demand for practical ownership solutions. The company's investment ensures that Watu Simu is accessible to customers in urban, peri-urban, and regional markets.

Empowering Communities and Future Outlook

The program has had a notable impact on female empowerment, with women constituting 42% of the one million customers and now half of all new clients. Furthermore, the initiative demonstrates a direct link between mobility and digital access, as over 6,000 boda riders have financed both a motorcycle and a smartphone through Watu. This synergy helps entrepreneurs effectively manage and grow their businesses with essential assets.

The real-world impact is evident in customer stories, such as that of Suzan, a Kampala market trader who uses her first financed phone to connect with suppliers. Similarly, Adrine, a tailor, has found the nine-month repayment plan manageable and has since referred others to the service. These testimonials underscore the program's role in improving daily life and business operations for many Ugandans.

Looking ahead, Watu is focused on maintaining its momentum and reaching its next million customers at an even faster pace. Mykyta Batenko, Head of Watu Simu in Uganda, affirmed the country's importance as a key market for the company's operations. This milestone provides a strong foundation for future expansion and continued efforts to enhance digital accessibility.

Watu Uganda's achievement of financing one million smartphones is more than a corporate milestone; it represents a significant contribution to bridging the digital divide in the country. Through strategic partnerships, a robust operational network, and a customer-centric financing model, the company is empowering individuals and fostering economic opportunity. This success sets a powerful precedent for the future of financial and digital inclusion across Uganda.
