Swiss startup PAVE Space has secured a landmark $40 million in seed funding to revolutionize in-space transportation. Co-led by Visionaries Club and Creandum, the investment will fuel the development of orbital vehicles that move satellites to final orbits in under 24 hours. This technology aims to solve a major logistics bottleneck in the expanding space economy.


Addressing the Orbital Bottleneck

Currently, rockets efficiently deliver satellites to low Earth orbit, but the final leg of the journey remains a significant challenge. Satellites often rely on their own low-thrust propulsion, a process that can take six to twelve months to complete. These extended transit times delay operations and significantly increase mission costs for satellite operators.

PAVE Space offers a direct solution with its family of high-performance orbital transfer vehicles (OTVs). These systems are engineered to ferry spacecraft from their initial drop-off point to destinations like geostationary or lunar orbit. By completing these transfers in less than a day, PAVE dramatically shortens mission timelines and enhances responsiveness.

Innovative Propulsion and Vehicle Design

At the core of PAVE's technology is its use of storable bipropellants, a strategic choice over more complex cryogenic fuels. This propellant system simplifies launch operations and contributes to a more cost-effective and reliable service. The company's approach is designed to make rapid orbital deployment both feasible and accessible for various missions.

The company is developing two distinct product lines to serve different market needs. Its flagship LYOBA is a 45 kN kick-stage engine for major orbital transfers, while the IBEX is a smaller, agile platform for dynamic repositioning. The IBEX vehicle is designed for dual-use applications, offering rapid maneuverability for commercial and defense clients.

A Vision for In-Space Logistics

PAVE's ambition extends to building the essential logistics backbone for the burgeoning orbital economy. The company is creating a launcher-agnostic service compatible with multiple launch providers, ensuring broad accessibility for its clients. This infrastructure will support satellite operators, telecommunication companies, and government defense organizations in their orbital operations.

The economic benefits of this approach are substantial, potentially reducing the cost of reaching higher orbits by 40 percent. According to CEO Julie Böhning, operators can book less expensive rides to LEO and rely on PAVE for the final transfer. This model makes missions to geostationary orbit more commercially viable and efficient.

Strategic Funding and Future Roadmap

The $40 million seed round represents a significant vote of confidence from the investment community. Visionaries Club and Creandum led the financing, joined by notable firms such as Lombard Odier Investment Managers and Atlantic. This capital provides the necessary resources for PAVE to transition from development to demonstration and commercialization.

PAVE has a clear and aggressive roadmap for deploying the new funds. The company plans a hotfire test of its engine by the end of the year and an in-space avionics demonstration in October. It will also expand its engineering team and establish a new office within the European Union.


With its substantial new funding and innovative technology, PAVE Space is poised to become a pivotal force in the in-space transportation sector.
