The core of SUN Mobility's strategy is an open-architecture platform, a significant departure from closed systems tied to a single vehicle brand. This model allows multiple manufacturers to integrate their electric motorcycles, scooters, and tuk-tuks into a single, shared battery swapping network. By eliminating the need for proprietary infrastructure, it lowers barriers to entry for vehicle makers and offers greater flexibility to fleet operators.
Technology Forged in a Proven Market
The company brings a well-tested model from India, where it operates over 2,000 stations across 25 cities, supporting more than 125,000 vehicles. Its ecosystem is built on a sophisticated platform developed over nine years and protected by more than 450 patents. The system combines swappable Smart Batteries, thermally managed Quick Interchange Stations, and a cloud-based Smart Network for asset tracking and management.
Strategic Alliance for Rapid Expansion
The collaboration with Vivo Energy is pivotal, providing immediate access to a vast network of Shell and Engen-branded fuel stations. This partnership will enable a rapid and scalable rollout, starting with 35 active stations in Nairobi and Mombasa. A key advantage for commercial riders is the significant reduction in operating costs, with savings of 20 percent for those covering 100 km daily. This figure rises to 35 percent for riders traveling 150 km per day, offering a compelling alternative to rising petrol prices. The launch event showcased compatible models from over ten manufacturers, including Piaggio, VMoto, and Fika Mobility, who are set to introduce their vehicles in Kenya.
A Vision for a Connected Continent
This Kenyan launch is the first step in a broader African strategy. Ajay Goel, SUN Mobility’s Co-Founder, stated the goal is to build the continent's largest universal battery swapping network, providing riders with more choice and financiers with greater confidence. The company plans to deploy over 160,000 vehicles powered by 2,500 stations across Africa within the next five years.
