Parafin, a company that builds embedded financing infrastructure for small and medium businesses, announced that it has reached an agreement to be acquired by Stripe. The move is intended to make it faster and easier for SMBs to obtain the financing they need to grow. The proposed transaction is expected to close in the coming months, subject to customary closing conditions and any required regulatory clearances.

Addressing a Broken Credit System

Parafin was founded in 2020 after its team observed that the businesses powering the economy, such as restaurants, auto shops, salons, and contractors, are often poorly served by traditional finance. Many small businesses can only realistically grow by borrowing, yet banks frequently rely on processes designed for large companies and personal credit scores. This leaves creditworthy owners facing weeks of applications, personal liability, and a high chance of rejection.

An Embedded Financing Model

Parafin's core insight was that software platforms such as point-of-sale systems, delivery marketplaces, booking tools, and payroll providers see data that banks do not. This data can assess a business's health more accurately than a personal credit score. The company built infrastructure that lets any platform embed financing into its own product through a single integration.

Traction and Product Expansion

Six years later, Parafin powers financing programs for DoorDash, Amazon, Gusto, SpotOn, Fullsteam, Jobber, and dozens of other platforms across major verticals in the United States economy. The company has funded more than US$3 billion for over 60,000 SMBs since its first cash advance in 2021. Its products now include flexible and term loans, business-to-business pay-over-time, and credit cards, all embedded and underwritten on real sales data.

Focus on Underserved Borrowers

Parafin said its greatest source of pride is not the volume of capital deployed, but the profile of the businesses it funds. The typical borrower is precisely the kind of company that incumbent lenders overlook, and those businesses return to Parafin and keep growing. That repeat engagement demonstrates the value of underwriting based on real sales data rather than traditional credit metrics.

Why Stripe Is the Right Fit

Parafin's leaders said they found a close alignment between their mission and Stripe's goal of increasing the GDP of the internet. Stripe has spent more than fifteen years making it easier for businesses to sell online, while Parafin has spent six years making it easier for them to grow. Joining Stripe will accelerate Parafin's roadmap through access to millions of businesses, international markets, and financial infrastructure spanning payments, treasury, issuing, billing, and stablecoins.

Continuity for Existing Partners

For current partners and their customers, Parafin stated that the same products, commitments, and support will continue. Offers, outstanding financing, and repayment terms will remain unaffected by the acquisition announcement. The combined scale and commitment are expected to allow more frequent testing, faster learning, and better options for platforms and the businesses they serve.

Regulatory Approval and Market Outlook

The proposed acquisition is expected to close in the coming months, subject to customary closing conditions and any required regulatory clearances. Parafin said the transaction will help business financing become a standard expectation rather than a feature offered by only a handful of sophisticated platforms. The company believes this will create more opportunities for small businesses that have historically been overlooked by incumbent lenders.

Parafin was started because its founders believed SMBs deserve financial products as good as those enjoyed by large companies. The company has already funded more than US$3 billion across 60,000 businesses, but its team describes the acquisition as just the beginning. Inside Stripe, Parafin expects to pursue its mission at a significantly greater scale and help more businesses thrive.
