Bengaluru-based spacetech startup QOSMIC has secured $3.3 million in a seed funding round to advance its space communication technology. The investment was led by prominent venture capital firms Accel and Prosus, with additional participation from South Park Commons and ARTPARK. QOSMIC is developing laser-based optical communication systems to overcome the limitations of current satellite data transmission infrastructure.
Addressing the Data Bottleneck
The burgeoning space industry faces a significant data bottleneck as tens of thousands of new satellites are projected to enter orbit. These satellites generate vast amounts of data, but traditional radio-frequency (RF) systems lack the capacity to transmit it all back to Earth efficiently. Consequently, a large percentage of valuable satellite data is currently lost due to these severe bandwidth constraints.
QOSMIC aims to solve this challenge by creating an optical highway from space to the ground. The company is building an end-to-end solution comprising optical ground stations and satellite communication terminals. This laser-based technology promises to transfer data at much higher speeds and handle significantly larger volumes of information than conventional RF systems can support.
Strategic Use of Capital
The newly acquired capital will be instrumental in accelerating the company's growth and product deployment. QOSMIC plans to use the funds to establish operational optical ground stations and deliver satellite communication terminals to its global clientele. A portion of the investment is also earmarked for scaling its manufacturing capabilities and expanding its engineering teams.
Founded in 2025 by Shreyaans Jain, Rohit Ramakrishnan, and Aloke Kumar, QOSMIC has already achieved significant technical milestones. The company successfully validated its complete optical communication system over a 10-kilometer terrestrial link, proving its high-speed data transfer and tracking capabilities. This achievement paves the way for upcoming in-orbit tests and the first commercial deployments of its technology.
Key Partnerships and Market Outlook
A key strategic move for the company is its recent partnership with TakeMe2Space to jointly develop optical inter-satellite link systems. Under this collaboration, QOSMIC will provide the optical communication terminals for TakeMe2Space's planned orbital data center constellation. The first terminal developed through this partnership is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2027.
Investors have expressed strong confidence in QOSMIC's mission to address a critical infrastructure gap in the space economy. They highlight that the future of space applications depends on the ability to move massive amounts of data, a capability currently hindered by outdated technology.
