Chilean regtech startup Sheriff has launched Marshal, an autonomous artificial intelligence agent designed to support compliance and due diligence processes across multiple jurisdictions. The product is intended to help financial institutions and other businesses assess the integrity, background, and risk profile of customers, suppliers, debtors, and counterparties using publicly available information. Alongside the launch, Sheriff is preparing to enter Colombia, which would become its second international market after Peru.

An AI Agent for Cross-Border Compliance

Marshal searches public databases and news sources to identify potential warning signs linked to sanctions, fraud, corruption, money laundering, organized crime, and politically exposed persons. The system can investigate individuals and companies in more than 192 countries, then produce a downloadable report containing its findings and the sources used in the assessment. These records are designed to provide an audit trail for know-your-customer, counterparty review, and broader risk-management procedures.

Technology and Commercial Model

The platform is built around Google’s Gemini models and search-indexing infrastructure, following Sheriff’s participation in a Google for Startups accelerator and guidance from the technology company’s teams. Marshal is currently available in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and Korean, while Sheriff plans to add Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and Hebrew. The product operates through a pay-per-query model, allowing companies to use it without committing to a conventional market-specific software deployment.

Early International Testing

Financial companies in Mexico, Portugal, and South Korea are already piloting Marshal, providing Sheriff with an early test of demand beyond its home market. The startup expects the first paid information queries in those countries to take place between 2026 and 2027 as it moves from pilots toward commercial use. This international approach positions Marshal as a product that can potentially serve companies even where Sheriff does not maintain a direct local presence.

Colombia Expansion Plans

Sheriff aims to secure its first Colombian clients before the first half of 2027 and is already holding discussions with local data providers. The company is also reviewing documentation with a financial-sector firm as it works toward establishing a partnership in the country. Colombia would follow Peru in Sheriff’s regional expansion and give the startup a larger base from which to address demand for compliance technology in Latin America.

Company Background and Strategy

Founded by brothers Vicente and Martín Cruz, Sheriff developed its original software to monitor customers, suppliers, and debtors while evaluating risks such as nonpayment and fraud. Marshal extends that proposition by enabling cross-border investigations through a standalone AI agent rather than relying solely on Sheriff’s country-specific operations. The strategy reflects the company’s effort to combine deeper regional expansion with a product capable of reaching clients operating across multiple markets and languages.

Market Relevance

The launch comes as financial institutions face growing pressure to review counterparties more efficiently while maintaining evidence that supports internal controls and regulatory audits. By consolidating open-source information and risk indicators into a single report, Marshal seeks to reduce the time required for preliminary investigations, although final compliance decisions will still depend on each organization’s policies and professional judgment. Its commercial progress will therefore depend on the quality of its data, the reliability of its risk assessments, and its ability to adapt to different regulatory environments.

Marshal represents Sheriff’s most ambitious effort to expand beyond its existing Latin American footprint and compete in the wider compliance technology market. Early pilots in three overseas markets, combined with the planned entry into Colombia, give the company several routes to test whether its AI-based model can translate into sustained demand. Sheriff’s next milestone will be converting those pilots and partnership discussions into paying customers while demonstrating that the platform can deliver consistent, auditable results across jurisdictions.
