Cleantech startup Serenity Power has successfully closed an oversubscribed $1.16 million CAD pre-seed funding round to advance its clean energy technology. Led by Avatar Ventures, the investment will help the Calgary and Toronto-based firm validate its remote power systems. This marks a significant step in its mission to decarbonize industrial operations by replacing traditional combustion generators.

A Fuel-Flexible Energy Solution

Serenity Power addresses the widespread reliance on costly and high-emission generators common in remote industrial settings like oil fields and construction sites. The company develops advanced solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that provide a cleaner, more efficient alternative. These systems offer significant fuel flexibility, capable of running on natural gas, hydrogen, methane, or blended fuels available on-site.

This adaptability allows industries to immediately reduce their carbon intensity without waiting for full grid electrification or a mature green hydrogen economy. By integrating an innovative reforming catalyst and intelligent system controls, the technology offers a practical pathway to decarbonization. Serenity's solution bridges a crucial gap, providing reliable distributed electricity with dramatically lower emissions at the point of use.

Accelerating Commercialization and Growth

The new capital is earmarked for accelerating the development of Serenity Power’s first working prototype and advancing its system engineering. A key objective is to execute initial field demonstrations with industry partners, validating the technology in real-world environments. The company is collaborating with Calgary’s Exergy Solutions to assist with system design and procurement for these crucial first units.

Funding will also support the expansion of the engineering team, with a search for a new Chief Technology Officer already in progress. The company is preparing for significant commercial milestones, including pilot projects scheduled for clients in Italy and Alberta this fall. This rapid progression from lab-scale innovation to market deployment is supported by multiple letters of intent from major organizations.

Strong Investor Confidence and Market Validation

The oversubscribed round was led by Avatar Ventures, whose partner Bryan Trudel will join Serenity’s board of directors. Other participants included Antimo, RPV, Front Row Ventures, The Firehood, and Rep Matters, reflecting broad investor confidence. This pre-seed capital builds upon $900,000 CAD in previous non-dilutive funding, bringing the company's total secured capital to over $2 million.

Serenity Power has already gained significant industry recognition, winning prestigious awards at MaRS Climate Impact and the Elevate Festival. CEO Aleisha Cerny noted the funding is a powerful vote of confidence in cleantech innovation during a challenging economic climate. This investment validates the company's business case and its potential to make a tangible impact on industrial emissions.

Future Outlook

With this funding secured, Serenity Power is already looking ahead to its next phase of growth and scaling. The company plans to raise a $5 million seed round in the first quarter of next year to further enhance system design. This future capital will also be used to accelerate the fulfillment of a growing pipeline of customer orders.

This $1.16 million pre-seed investment empowers Serenity Power to transition from promising research into tangible commercial application. The capital will accelerate the deployment of its fuel-flexible power systems, offering a scalable solution for industries seeking to decarbonize remote operations. As the company moves toward pilot projects and future funding, it is well-positioned to become a key player in the global energy transition.
