Serán Bioscience, a contract development and manufacturing organization focused on pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients, has secured a growth investment led by Biospring Partners. The round also includes continued participation from existing investors Vivo Capital, Bain Capital Life Sciences, and members of the company's executive leadership. The new capital commitment will support the company's expansion from clinical development services into commercial-scale manufacturing.

Accelerating Clinical to Commercial Expansion

The investment responds directly to rising customer demand for advanced particle engineering and commercial-scale manufacturing technologies. Serán is broadening its service offerings to provide enabling solutions that span early development through commercial supply. The company aims to create a seamless pathway for pharmaceutical clients seeking both clinical support and long-term manufacturing capacity.

New Greenfield Commercial Facility

A centerpiece of the expansion strategy is the construction of a greenfield commercial manufacturing facility in Bend, Oregon, scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2027. The multi-suite campus is purpose-built for OEB4 manufacturing and supports oral, pulmonary, and other delivery modalities. It will feature commercial-scale particle engineering technologies including spray drying and nano-milling.

Comprehensive Finished Dose Capabilities

The new site will also provide finished dose services such as granulation, tableting, coating, encapsulation, and specialized dry powder filling for inhalation products. These capabilities will cover immediate and modified release profiles to meet diverse client requirements. The greenfield expansion integrates with Serán's recently completed adjacent packaging and logistics facility, which offers validated packaging, labeling, unit-level serialization, and global cold-chain distribution.

Executive Perspectives

Dan Smithey, Co-Founder and CEO of Serán, described the investment as a significant milestone in the company's evolution toward supporting new medicine launches. He noted that backing from Biospring Partners, Bain Capital Life Sciences, and Vivo Capital positions Serán to complete its commercial facility on schedule. Smithey also emphasized the company's goal to deliver life-changing therapies from early discovery through commercial launch.

Socrates Zacharias, a Principal at Biospring Partners, said the firm is excited to support Serán's transition to commercial-scale manufacturing. He highlighted the company's track record of quality and speed, along with its recognition as a scientific and operational leader in spray drying. Zacharias added that growing demand for spray drying in complex oral drugs makes Serán well-positioned to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies bring therapies to patients.

Gaurav Aggarwal, a Managing Partner at Vivo Capital, stated that the company is now realizing a vision to add commercial capabilities and create a true end-to-end offering. He expressed confidence that Biospring's deep experience will support Serán's next phase of growth. Aggarwal also noted enthusiasm on behalf of Vivo colleagues and partners at Bain.

Workforce Growth and Investor Support

Serán currently employs more than 200 total team members, including over 150 scientists and engineers. As the commercial expansion progresses, the company plans to hire as many as 150 additional employees. This growth will support the creation of an integrated campus of more than 200,000 square feet in Bend, Oregon.

Biospring Partners is a healthcare growth buyout firm investing in the pharma services sector, with more than US$500 million in assets under management. Bain Capital Life Sciences focuses on biopharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostic, and life science tool companies across the globe. Vivo Capital, founded in 1996, manages approximately US$5.8 billion in assets and has invested in over 400 companies worldwide.

With new investment and continued support from established life sciences investors, Serán Bioscience is positioned to scale its clinical and commercial operations. The company's integrated campus and expanded service portfolio aim to address increasing demand for specialized manufacturing and particle engineering. By combining technical expertise with new infrastructure, Serán seeks to accelerate the development and delivery of complex therapies for patients.
