Swedish ClimateTech startup Salt & Fiber has successfully secured €300,000 in pre-seed funding to scale its innovative textile production from beached seagrass. The Malmö-based company is pioneering a process that transforms this abundant natural resource into a high-performance, sustainable yarn. This unique approach simultaneously addresses the environmental impact of the fashion industry and the costly challenge of coastal waste management.


A Dual-Pronged Environmental Solution

Coastal municipalities currently spend millions to remove and landfill beached seagrass, a practice that results in significant methane emissions. At the same time, the conventional textile industry remains one of the world's most polluting sectors, facing growing regulatory pressure. European brands must now comply with frameworks like the CSRD, demanding greater supply-chain transparency and lower environmental impact.

The Science of Sustainable Seagrass Textiles

Salt & Fiber's innovative process creates a valuable material from a resource that requires no fresh water, fertilizers, or arable land. The resulting plant-based fibers are fully biodegradable, ensuring they do not contribute to microplastic pollution throughout their lifecycle. The company’s production methods also exclude harmful chemicals, generating no toxic by-products and ensuring environmental safety.

A significant advantage of the seagrass textile is its natural fire resistance, which negates the need for chemical flame retardant treatments. This inherent property allows the material to self-extinguish, offering a safer and more eco-friendly product for consumers. The recent €300,000 pre-seed investment provides the essential capital needed to advance the company's technology and scale its operations. The company is already demonstrating significant market traction, with pilot production in progress and a supply agreement secured with a Swedish coastal municipality. Further validation comes from its participation in the esteemed Älmhult x IKEA incubator, which provides access to critical industry expertise. These milestones pave the way for the company's targeted commercialization between 2027 and 2028.
