S2G Investments has announced a significant expansion of its leadership team with the appointment of Brian O’Connor as Managing Director and Co-Head of Special Opportunities. O’Connor, a seasoned professional in infrastructure and energy finance, is set to join the multi-stage investment firm in May. His recruitment underscores S2G's commitment to enhancing its structured finance solutions for businesses focused on assets in critical sectors like food, agriculture, and energy.

A Veteran in Energy and Infrastructure Finance

Brian O’Connor brings over two decades of specialized experience to his new role at S2G Investments. Most recently, he served as a Partner at Global Infrastructure Partners, where he led credit transactions across the power, renewables, and energy transition sectors. This background provides him with a deep understanding of the complex financial needs of modern infrastructure projects and companies navigating the evolving energy landscape.

Prior to his tenure at Global Infrastructure Partners, O’Connor spent 12 years at Ares Management, where he was instrumental in building a team focused on infrastructure-related structured finance. During this period, he oversaw approximately $3 billion in transactions spanning senior debt, mezzanine, and various equity structures. His career foundation was built during nine years at EIG Global Energy Partners, focusing on investments in power generation.

Enhancing the Special Opportunities Platform

At S2G, O’Connor will co-lead the Special Opportunities strategy alongside Managing Director Andrea Woodside, concentrating on sourcing and managing investments. This platform complements the firm's growth equity activities by offering flexible, structured finance for asset-heavy companies and projects. The strategy is designed to provide tailored capital solutions that support growth while incorporating downside protection for investors through tangible assets.

The Special Opportunities team leverages its extensive domain expertise to invest in businesses supported by hard assets, contracts, and predictable cash flows. The firm typically targets investment sizes ranging from $10 million to $40 million, utilizing instruments like senior secured debt and structured equity. This approach specifically addresses the underserved ‘Missing Middle’ capital gap between early-stage venture funding and large-scale infrastructure financing.

A Strategic Vision for Modern Infrastructure

O’Connor expressed his belief that creative and structured capital is the essential bridge between affordable energy and the communities that require it. He emphasized that providing fit-for-purpose financing is key to enabling the deployment of 21st-century business models in energy and infrastructure. He looks forward to advancing this vision in partnership with the S2G team to drive meaningful impact.

Sanjeev Krishnan, Managing Partner at S2G, highlighted the strategic importance of O'Connor's appointment for the firm. He stated that bringing in a leader of O'Connor's caliber significantly elevates the firm's ability to underwrite complex industrial assets. Krishnan noted that his deep roots in the energy sector will be instrumental in expanding the Special Opportunities platform and executing high-impact transactions.

The addition of Brian O’Connor marks a period of significant momentum for S2G as it continues to deploy capital into essential economic sectors. By strengthening its senior leadership, the firm reinforces its position as a key financial partner for companies building more efficient and resilient industrial systems. This strategic hire signals a clear intent to scale its capabilities in providing sophisticated, asset-backed financing solutions for the future.
