Restate, a durable execution company founded by the creators of Apache Flink, announced a US$20 million Series A funding round led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The investment brings the company's total funding to US$27 million and will support product development and a new commercial hub in San Francisco. The Berlin and San Francisco-based company is building infrastructure for modern applications, distributed backends, and AI agents.
Scaling Durable Execution for Modern Workloads
The company provides durable execution infrastructure that allows software to remember completed steps and recover correctly after failures, without requiring developers to engineer recovery into every component. Restate is already used by hundreds of companies for mission-critical use cases, including durable execution for the latest Replit Agent and enterprise workflows at DOSS, BILT rewards, and Fortune 500 organizations. The new capital will accelerate product development and expansion in the United States.
Why AI Agents Raise the Stakes
Most software has always been built for interruption, as servers restart, networks drop, and APIs become unavailable while processes stop midway. Durable execution has historically made individual processes reliable by preserving progress after failure. AI agents increase the challenge because they can run continuously, call models and tools, interact with other agents and humans, and change direction while work is underway.
A Purpose-Built Architecture
Restate's core is a purpose-built distributed log and event-driven orchestrator, rather than a durable execution layer placed on top of a general-purpose database. This approach makes execution, state, and communication part of one self-contained system that does not require an external database or search system. The design reflects the founders' experience building Apache Flink into foundational infrastructure for real-time data systems.
Leadership Perspectives on Durable Infrastructure
Stephan Ewen, CEO and co-founder of Restate, said durable execution solved an important problem by making individual processes reliable, but software is increasingly made up of services, agents, workflows, and state that all need to remain reliable as they interact. He added that durability has to become a property of the infrastructure itself. Singular Partner Henri Tilloy said the company is redefining where durable execution can be applied by bringing execution, state, and communication together in a runtime developers can use across an application.
Adoption in Production and Enterprise Settings
Replit selected Restate after upgrading the architecture behind Replit Agent, with its President and Head of AI, Michele Catasta, noting that the company needed a durable execution runtime that was fast and enjoyable for developers. Restate now handles durable orchestration at Replit, giving the company flexibility to expand its agent platform. This production use illustrates how quickly agent architectures are adopting durable execution infrastructure.
The company also recently launched Bring Your Own Cloud, or BYOC, which lets companies run fully managed Restate inside their own cloud account and Virtual Private Cloud, or VPC, while keeping application data within their own infrastructure. This option supports security and compliance requirements for enterprise adoption. The capability aligns with the company's push to make durable infrastructure accessible across more architectures and regulated environments.
With US$20 million in new funding, Restate is positioned to extend its durable execution foundation deeper into the AI agent ecosystem and enterprise software. The company's goal is to make durability a native property of infrastructure, not a feature confined to individual workflows. As AI agents and distributed backends become more complex, Restate's approach may become an essential layer for applications that must remain reliable through constant change.
