Ramona Optics, a biotools company based in Durham, North Carolina, has announced the closing of an oversubscribed $25 million Series A financing round. The investment was led by ARCH Venture Partners with participation from several life science, technology, and venture investors. The new funding will support commercial growth, platform advancement, and expanded assay capabilities for biomedical research.

Funding and Strategic Priorities

The Series A round drew support from Stealthpoint Ventures, ND Capital, Fall Line Capital, Hamamatsu Ventures, Murchison Capital Partners, and Overlap Holdings. Ramona intends to use the capital to scale commercial operations and advance its proprietary multi-camera array microscopy technology known as MCAM. The company also plans to expand on-platform assay capabilities and deepen strategic partnerships across biopharma and biomedical research.

A New Class of Microscopy

According to the company, traditional microscopes have long been designed for human observation rather than quantitative measurement. Ramona's MCAM technology is built for computation, enabling statistically meaningful data collection across many measurements instead of relying on a single field of view. This approach allows artificial intelligence to extract insights from large high-definition datasets that extend beyond human observation.

Platform Capabilities and Commercial Systems

The MCAM architecture parallelizes optics, illumination, sensing, and computation to overcome the long-standing tradeoff between field of view and resolution. Ramona offers benchtop systems for assays in multi-well plates, including Vireo for cellular models and Kestrel for small model organisms. These systems combine imaging with embedded AI to make large-scale biological data actionable in real time.

Applications in Biomedical Research

Vireo is designed for cellular models, while Kestrel serves small model organisms, enabling high-throughput screening across multi-well plates. The systems capture gigapixel-level detail synchronously over hundreds of square centimeters, a capability the company describes as the first of its kind. This makes Ramona's solutions well suited for model organism research, cellular screening, and other applications that require both scale and precision.

Investor Confidence

Patrick Weiss, venture partner at ARCH Venture Partners and chairman of Ramona's board, described the company as having developed a fundamentally new class of microscopy technology. He noted that its products are already being adopted by academic and industry customers and that its massively parallel imaging supports AI model development on biology. Weiss added that Ramona is well positioned to scale deployments and expand its role in drug discovery globally.

Leadership and Scientific Expertise

Backed by 29 patents, Ramona's interdisciplinary team includes 12 PhDs with expertise in computational imaging, machine learning, computer architecture, cancer biology, and neuroscience. Chief Executive Officer Gregor Horstmeyer leads strategic direction and product vision, while co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Mark Harfouche oversees technical strategy and product development. The leadership group also includes Chief Operating Officer Margaret Aery and co-founder and Scientific Director Roarke Horstmeyer, who is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Duke University.

Strategic Vision

Chief Executive Officer Gregor Horstmeyer emphasized that advancing drug candidates and making accurate diagnoses now require statistically meaningful data rather than single observations. He said Ramona's technology helps scientists and doctors develop treatments that keep people living healthier longer lives. The company believes its computational imaging approach can accelerate discovery in living systems by providing an enormous field of visual data in seconds without sacrificing resolution.

Ramona Optics positions itself as a leading biotools company with a scalable platform for high-throughput and AI-enabled imaging. The Series A financing provides resources to meet growing demand among industry and academic customers. As the company expands its product deployments and partnerships, it aims to play a larger role in biomedical research and drug discovery worldwide.
