The University of Melbourne has announced that its research spinout R2Crete has raised A$750,000 in Pre-Seed funding to commercialize a patented concrete recycling technology. The round was supported by the university’s Genesis Pre-Seed Fund and research commercialization investor Uniseed. The new capital will help the company build a pilot plant, run industry trials, and develop commercial partnerships.

Concrete’s Environmental Burden

Concrete is the world’s most widely used construction material and is responsible for an estimated 7% to 8% of global carbon emissions. In Australia alone, around 7 million metric tons of waste concrete are generated every year, and most of it ends up in landfill. R2Crete’s process aims to recover valuable materials from this waste stream while reducing the need for virgin sand, gravel, and limestone.

Turning Waste into Usable Materials

R2Crete’s patented method separates demolished concrete into clean aggregates and a cement replacement product that can be used in new concrete production. The company reports that the process recovers up to 75% of the cement in waste concrete and delivers a 50% reduction in carbon emissions. It also maintains the performance properties of conventional concrete, an important requirement for adoption by the construction sector.

Pilot Plant and Industry Validation

The Pre-Seed funding will support construction of a pilot commercial plant that is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Field trials are scheduled to begin in early 2027, and R2Crete is already discussing potential partnerships with industry participants. These trials will test whether the recycled materials can be produced reliably, cost effectively, and at commercial scale.

Founders and Early Support

R2Crete was cofounded by Dr. Tuan Nguyen, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne, together with Managing Director Warren Overton and Professor Mahdi Miri Disfani. The core technology is based on research developed by Dr. Nguyen and previously received support from the university’s Proof-of-Concept Fund. The team also participated in the Translating Research at Melbourne program and secured funding through Australia’s Economic Accelerator Ignite program.

Management’s Outlook

Managing Director Warren Overton described the investment as a pivotal moment for R2Crete because it allows the company to move from laboratory success to real-world commercial deployment. He said the pilot plant will demonstrate that high-value recycled aggregates and cement replacement products can be made reliably and cost effectively at scale. Overton added that this will help the construction industry transition to a more circular and lower carbon future.

Investor Perspectives

Uniseed Investment Manager Jeffrey Bourne said R2Crete’s process stands out for its ability to produce high-quality recycled and low-carbon materials for concrete production in a cost-effective and efficient manner. He added that Uniseed believes R2Crete is well-positioned to become a leader in sustainable construction materials. Bourne said the investor is proud to support the company’s journey from research to commercial reality.

R2Crete’s Pre-Seed round is relatively small in dollar terms, but it addresses a significant environmental challenge and supports a critical stage of technology validation. The company’s ability to recycle concrete at commercial scale could reduce landfill waste, lower carbon emissions, and ease demand for raw construction materials. With the pilot plant under development and field trials planned for early 2027, R2Crete’s next milestones will be closely watched by the construction and climate technology sectors.
