Hong Kong-based fintech platform Qupital, which specializes in cross-border e-commerce trade finance, announced on 6 October 2026 the official launch of what it describes as the world's first AI-driven on-chain e-commerce lending protocol. The solution combines real-time AI credit monitoring with Ethereum smart contracts and USDC settlement to modernize cross-border trade finance operations. The announcement comes directly ahead of Token 2049 and targets a US$2.5 trillion SME trade financing funding gap.

How the Protocol Works

The new protocol shifts day-to-day trade loan operations into an automated and highly transparent framework powered by smart contracts and proprietary AI credit monitoring. Qupital deploys USDC through Ethereum smart contracts, which removes legacy banking delays and manual oversight while delivering instant, 24/7 liquidity to high-growth global merchants. When store metrics deviate from agreed parameters, smart contracts automatically invoke payment gateway APIs to capture platform cashflows and satisfy debt obligations.

AI-Guarded Risk Control

Qupital's AI risk engine integrates with automated payment gateway APIs to monitor sales performance and capture settlement cashflows directly. The system continuously adjusts credit exposure based on sales-to-loan performance and reacts when store metrics fall outside predefined thresholds. By merging AI intelligence with on-chain execution, Qupital reduces credit risk, eliminates manual intervention, and supports digital trade through automated, smart-contract-driven liquidity vaults.

Capital Efficiency and Auditability

The protocol replaces manual back-office drawdown verification and settlement calls with smart contracts, accelerating capital turnover and reducing operational overhead. Every active loan is tokenized on-chain to Qupital's Treasury Vault, providing institutional lenders and partners with real-time proof of reserves. This structure supports 1:1 balance sheet verification and creates a more transparent audit environment for tokenized trade finance.

Market Opportunity

B2B cross-border stablecoin settlements are projected to reach US$5 trillion by 2035, with over 54% of cross-border enterprises preparing to adopt stablecoin payment infrastructure. Qupital's protocol directly addresses this institutional and merchant demand for faster settlement and continuous liquidity. The company sees the move as a direct response to a US$2.5 trillion SME trade financing gap that traditional banks have not fully served.

Growth Strategy and Institutional Backing

Qupital has processed more than US$9.5 billion in cumulative trade financing while maintaining what it calls industry-leading credit performance. The company reports an active on-chain financing pipeline of US$100 million and continues to execute on its recently announced Series C growth roadmap. It is backed by institutions including HSBC, MUFG, Alibaba, MindWorks Capital, and the Hong Kong SAR Government's Innovation and Technology Ventures Fund.

Executive Perspective

Winston Wong, Co-Founder and CEO of Qupital, said that agentic commerce and instant global settlement require financing infrastructure that operates around the clock. He noted that blockchain rails streamline distribution and accelerate settlement times while traditional banking remains a core pillar of the company's trade finance operations. Wong added that integrating Qupital's AI risk engine into on-chain frameworks eliminates operational friction, minimizes non-performing loans, and expands the company's global footprint.

Qupital's on-chain expansion sets a new institutional standard for tokenized trade finance. By bringing real-world trade assets on-chain, the company aims to close a multi-trillion dollar SME financing gap and deliver accessible, frictionless capital to digital enterprises underserved by traditional banks. The launch reflects broader momentum in Decentralized Finance and Real-World Assets as global commerce increasingly adopts stablecoin settlement infrastructure.
