Munich-based Quantum Diamonds has appointed veteran semiconductor executive Peter Lemmens as its Managing Director for Asia. This strategic hire coincides with the company's establishment of a new regional hub in Taiwan. The move signals a significant acceleration of the company's global expansion plans into the world's most advanced chip manufacturing markets.
Strategic Leadership for Asian Expansion
Peter Lemmens brings over 25 years of industry leadership, with more than 15 years based in Taiwan. His background includes key roles as General Manager at IMS Nanofabrication and a decade-long tenure at the research hub imec. This experience has allowed him to build strong relationships with top-tier chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung.
At IMS Nanofabrication, Lemmens built the Taiwan operation from the ground up to a team of over 100 employees. Previously at imec, he founded the organization's first technology center outside of Europe, growing it into a multi-country operation. His proven ability to scale businesses makes him an ideal leader to drive adoption of the company's technology.
Addressing a Critical Industry Need
The semiconductor industry faces a major inflection point as device architectures become increasingly complex. Innovations like 3D stacking and advanced packaging present significant challenges for quality control. Consequently, the demand for non-destructive, high-resolution metrology solutions has reached an all-time high.
According to Peter Lemmens, open faults are the primary cause of yield loss in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The industry has long struggled without an effective, non-destructive method to identify these critical issues early. This inspection gap creates a substantial bottleneck for manufacturers striving to improve production efficiency and reliability.
A Breakthrough in Metrology Technology
QuantumDiamonds has developed a transformative solution with its Quantum Diamonds Microscopy (QDM) technology. This patented platform is the world's first integrated quantum sensing system designed for semiconductor failure analysis. It enables non-destructive, high-resolution 3D imaging of current pathways within advanced chip architectures.
Unlike conventional methods that require destructive deconstruction of a chip, QDM can pinpoint faults in minutes. This dramatically shortens failure analysis cycles, allowing engineers to quickly address manufacturing issues. The ability to visualize electrical activity in three dimensions without damaging the sample significantly improves manufacturing yields.
Market Momentum and Future Outlook
The company is gaining significant traction, with nine of the world's top ten semiconductor manufacturers actively engaged with its technology. QuantumDiamonds announced its first commercial deployments in the United States and Taiwan in March 2026. This market validation underscores the urgent need for its innovative inspection solutions across the global ecosystem.
This expansion follows a $172 million investment in a Munich-based inspection facility announced in late 2025. CEO Kevin Berghoff noted that Lemmens' operational depth and industry credibility are perfectly suited to accelerate growth. The new Taiwan hub will serve as the base for scaling commercial and technical activities throughout the region.
The appointment of Peter Lemmens and the establishment of a Taiwan hub mark a pivotal moment for QuantumDiamonds. This strategic expansion transforms the company from a European deep-tech startup into a global metrology platform. It solidifies the company's ambition to become an indispensable partner for the world's leading chipmakers.
