Promethean BioPharma has launched a A$3.2 million equity crowdfunding campaign as it moves toward a possible regulatory milestone for a CBD pain relief tablet in Australia. The Sydney-based biotechnology company has submitted its zero-THC nano-particle cannabidiol tablet to the Therapeutic Goods Administration under the Provisional Registration Pathway. A decision is expected within approximately six months and could position Australia as the first country to register a CBD tablet for pain.
Clinical Trial Results and Safety Signals
The company completed an eight-week clinical study involving 155 adults to assess the safety profile of the tablet. The trial did not achieve statistically significant efficacy across the entire cohort, but approximately 10 percent of participants receiving the active treatment were classified as high responders. These patients recorded a two to four point reduction on the Brief Pain Inventory Short Form, a result the company views as a basis for future efficacy focused trials.
Regulatory Submission and Market Access
Promethean BioPharma has lodged its medicine with the TGA under the Provisional Registration Pathway, with a decision anticipated in about six months. If provisional registration is granted, the product could transition from prescription only access to pharmacy shelves and become available through more than 40,000 Australian general practitioners. This would remove the need for patients to navigate the existing Special Access Scheme or Authorised Prescriber pathways that currently govern medicinal cannabis access.
Crowdfunding and Manufacturing Scale Up
The equity crowdfunding raise is being hosted on the OnMarket platform and is intended to support good manufacturing practice scale up and regulatory costs. Funds will also be directed toward facility upgrades, physician engagement, and early stage trials for sleep and anxiety formulations using the same delivery platform. Promethean BioPharma chief executive Peter Comerford described the campaign as part of an effort to keep Australian science Australian owned.
Technology Platform and Economic Potential
The tablet uses a proprietary nano particle delivery system that enables consistent dosing and shelf stability of more than three years, addressing a technical challenge that has slowed CBD product commercialisation. Promethean BioPharma points to Denmark's pharmaceutical sector and its global exports as an analogy for what Australia could achieve from a small domestic market. The company argues that Australia currently holds a genuine head start because the United States requires its own domestic trial before recognising overseas results.
Investor Confidence and Global Ambitions
Mr Comerford said the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation has indicated it is ready to support the next stage if the TGA registration is successful. The company also hopes Australian approval will support regulatory applications in markets including the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany. However, Promethean BioPharma cautioned that US competitors have the runway to close the gap in an export category worth billions.
Current Access and Over-the-Counter Ambitions
Medicinal cannabis products in Australia are currently available through prescribed pathways, but patients often face administrative complexity. Promethean BioPharma's tablet contains zero THC, which the company highlights as a key point of differentiation from products associated with psychoactive effects. The company's longer term goal is for the medicine to be treated like paracetamol or ibuprofen and sold over the counter, although further clinical testing would be required for that step.
Promethean BioPharma's submission represents a significant test case for Australia's regulatory and life sciences ambitions. The combination of clinical safety data, advanced manufacturing plans and equity crowdfunding reflects a broader push to build a globally competitive pharmaceutical base from domestic research. A positive TGA decision in the coming months could move the product closer to pharmacy shelves and give Australia an early advantage in the emerging CBD therapeutics market.
