Palo Alto Networks has announced its strategic intent to acquire Portkey, a company specializing in AI Gateway technology. This acquisition aims to bolster security for the increasing use of autonomous AI agents within enterprises. Portkey's platform will be integrated into Palo Alto Networks' Prisma AIRS, creating a centralized control plane for managing and protecting AI interactions.


Addressing a New Era of AI Risk

The enterprise landscape is rapidly evolving from simple AI copilots to sophisticated autonomous agents. This transition has significantly widened the AI security gap, as these agents often operate with high privileges. They execute a large volume of automated decisions, effectively becoming a new and unmanaged attack surface for businesses.

A Centralized Gateway for AI Security

Portkey's technology provides a critical centralized control plane designed to manage and protect these autonomous agents. Its AI Gateway is already processing trillions of tokens monthly while maintaining the low latency required for complex agent communications. This system will serve as the AI Gateway for Prisma AIRS, acting as a central nervous system for all AI activity.

By establishing this unified architecture, Palo Alto Networks aims to eliminate the difficult choice between innovation and safety. The integration will allow organizations to move autonomous workloads into production with built-in security and reliability. This approach is designed to inspect all AI traffic and enforce governance policies to prevent threats at runtime.

The platform will enforce strict AI Identity Security, applying least-privilege controls to every agent interaction. This ensures that all AI workloads remain secure and compliant with internal and external regulations. Organizations will also gain deep technical telemetry and audit logs, providing the real-time visibility required to inspect every interaction.

Businesses can also expect to achieve mission-critical reliability with high uptime through features like semantic routing and automated failovers.
