Copenhagen-based startup Palette has successfully closed a €3 million pre-seed funding round to advance its AI context management platform. The investment was led by Ugly Duckling Ventures and will support the company's mission to empower businesses with model neutrality. Palette aims to provide companies with the tools to own their AI context, preventing dependency on any single large language model vendor.

A Vision for AI Independence

Co-founder Brian Kyed, drawing from a decade of experience building his previous startup, identified a critical challenge in the AI landscape. As companies integrate AI, they risk becoming locked into a single provider's ecosystem, ceding control over their data and pricing. Palette was founded on the principle that companies should own their context, enabling them to swap AI models as newer, better, or cheaper alternatives emerge.

The company's initial product, Palette Desktop, brings this vision to life by allowing teams to use any AI agent directly on their files. This functionality integrates with popular cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox, fostering collaboration across different AI models. The goal is to extend the flexibility already enjoyed by software engineers to every department within an organization, creating a unified workflow.

Strategic Funding and Market Positioning

The €3 million investment will be instrumental in scaling Palette's commercial operations and expanding its team from eight to ten members. With support from Emblem, Acadian Ventures, and several angel investors, the primary focus is on converting its initial design partners into paying customers. The company has already validated its product, with early users demonstrating a willingness to pay for the platform's capabilities.

While the threat of major AI players like OpenAI or Anthropic developing their own context layers is real, Kyed believes the more immediate challenge is different. He is less concerned with established competitors and more focused on addressing the widespread corporate inertia surrounding AI adoption. Palette aims to be the catalyst for companies that want to become AI-native but are unsure how to begin their journey.

An Experienced Team and Investor Confidence

Palette was founded in 2025 by a team of seasoned entrepreneurs: Brian Kyed, Lars Ettrup, Steffen D. Sommer, and Christian Lomholt. Kyed's previous venture, which he grew from a crowdfunding project into a successful business, provided him with deep insights into the startup lifecycle. This experience fueled his desire to build a company that addresses the foundational challenges of the new AI-driven era of software.

The lead investor, Ugly Duckling Ventures, expressed strong conviction in the founding team's capabilities and foresight. Andreas Green Rasmussen, a partner at the firm, noted their previous working relationship and praised the team's early recognition of key trends in AI workflows. He stated that Palette has the potential to become the essential operating layer for companies adopting AI across their entire organization.

The Future of AI Context Management

Kyed envisions the context layer market segmenting into distinct areas, including specialized contexts for codebases and financial data. Palette is strategically focused on the context surrounding how work moves between people, a domain that becomes increasingly complex as AI accelerates business processes. As workflows speed up, he argues, it becomes impossible for humans to manually document their actions, making an automated context layer essential.

Industry data supports this outlook, with a recent report indicating that 91% of companies plan to acquire a context platform within the next year. However, the same report highlights a significant gap, with 61% of AI projects being delayed due to concerns about data trust. Palette's platform is designed to bridge this gap by providing a secure and durable context management infrastructure for businesses.

Palette is positioning itself as a crucial enabler for the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in the enterprise sector. By championing a model-agnostic approach, the company allows businesses to maintain control and flexibility while building a durable AI context. While competition looms, Palette's immediate goal is to provide a clear and accessible starting point for the many companies yet to embrace AI, potentially shaping the future of collaborative work.
