OpenAI is set to bolster Australia's artificial intelligence sector with its inaugural "Startups Week," a series of events scheduled in Sydney from March 18 to 20. This initiative aims to provide local founders and developers with direct, hands-on access to the company's latest frontier models and development tools. The program, organized in collaboration with leading local venture capital firms and innovation hubs, underscores a significant commitment to fostering AI innovation within the Australian market.

Fostering Local AI Innovation

The core philosophy behind Startups Week is to create a practical, builder-focused environment, moving beyond high-level discussions about AI's potential. Chris Kirk of Stone & Chalk emphasized that these are not "hype sessions" but workshops where founders can witness the velocity of AI-native development firsthand. The events are designed to showcase how startups can ship products at speeds that previously required large teams, offering a rare glimpse into the ingenuity of Australia's AI community.

A Deep Dive into AI Development

The curriculum for the week is centered on intensive technical deep dives, equipping participants with the knowledge to build and scale AI-native products effectively. The sessions will cover crucial topics such as advanced API implementation, strategies for cost optimization, and the construction of reliable and robust AI workflows. Attendees will also receive updates on OpenAI's latest multimodal capabilities and explore the potential of Codex, its agentic coding tool for multi-agent development.

Collaborative Ecosystem Engagement

A key feature of the week is the deep integration with Sydney's technology ecosystem, with events co-hosted by prominent local partners. Venture capital firms Square Peg and Side Stage Ventures are among the key collaborators, alongside innovation hub Stone & Chalk. This collaborative approach ensures that participating founders receive not only technical guidance from OpenAI but also strategic insights from established leaders within the Australian startup landscape.

Local AI company Relevance AI will play a significant role by co-hosting a builder session at its Sydney headquarters. Co-CEO Jacky Koh expressed excitement about giving builders hands-on access to new tools and live demos, leveraging their experience of growing by building on OpenAI's technology. The session will also feature the launch of Relevance AI’s Programmatic GTM, a new developer tool for building and deploying teams of AI agents for go-to-market strategies.

Thomas Jeng, OpenAI’s VC Partnerships Lead for the APAC region, will lead several key events throughout the week, ensuring direct engagement with the company's strategic team. He will co-host a workshop with Square Peg focused on optimizing multi-agent workflows and lead a builder lounge event at Stone & Chalk’s Tech Central hub. These sessions, along with a founder breakfast, are designed to provide practical guidance and facilitate valuable networking opportunities for the next generation of AI entrepreneurs.

OpenAI's Startups Week in Sydney marks a pivotal moment for the Australian AI ecosystem, providing an unparalleled opportunity for direct engagement with a global technology leader. By focusing on practical application and fostering collaboration with local partners, the initiative is poised to accelerate the growth of AI-native companies across the country. This hands-on approach empowers local founders to build smarter, faster, and more globally competitive solutions, solidifying Australia's position on the world's innovation map.
