Novonesis, a global leader in biosolutions, has announced its agreement to acquire MicroBioGen, an Australian biotechnology firm specializing in industrial yeast strains. This strategic move aims to fully integrate MicroBioGen's advanced yeast technology, particularly for bioethanol production, into Novonesis' portfolio. The acquisition finalizes a long-standing partnership, solidifying Novonesis' commitment to innovation in biological solutions.

Strengthening a Decade-Long Partnership

The acquisition represents the culmination of a relationship that began over ten years ago with a significant investment. In 2013, Novonesis initially acquired a 23% stake in the Australian company, laying the groundwork for extensive collaboration. This long-term partnership has been instrumental in co-developing advanced yeast solutions for the global market.

A key outcome of their joint efforts has been the successful Innova® yeast series, which demonstrates exceptional performance in industrial settings. This history of shared success highlights the synergy between the two companies' scientific and commercial goals. The full acquisition is therefore seen as a natural and logical step in their shared journey of innovation.

Strategic R&D and Market Expansion

This transaction is a pivotal component of Novonesis' broader 2030 strategy, which emphasizes disciplined investment to fuel growth. Ester Baiget, CEO of Novonesis, noted that the deal fortifies the company's core yeast and research capabilities. The move is designed to enhance their ability to develop next-generation biosolutions for a diverse customer base.

By integrating MicroBioGen's expertise, Novonesis aims to accelerate its innovation pipeline, particularly in the bioethanol sector. Claus Crone Fuglsang, Chief Scientific Officer at Novonesis, described MicroBioGen as a perfect match for their R&D framework. This integration will bolster their capacity to meet evolving customer needs with cutting-edge biological products.

MicroBioGen has built a strong reputation over two decades with its platform technology and extensive library of elite yeast genetics. The company's "Yeast Innovation as a Service" model has attracted industry leaders across various sectors. This acquisition allows Novonesis to leverage this unique platform for broader applications beyond bioethanol, including baking and sustainable feed.

Integrating Expertise and Ensuring Continuity

Geoffrey Bell, CEO and Co-founder of MicroBioGen, expressed confidence that joining Novonesis is an ideal outcome for his company and its employees. He emphasized that the deep-rooted collaboration makes Novonesis the best possible home for MicroBioGen's future. This sentiment underscores the cultural and scientific alignment between the two organizations.

Novonesis has committed to ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining continuity for all of MicroBioGen's existing partners and collaborations. This pledge is crucial for preserving the value and relationships that the Australian firm has cultivated over the years. The company will continue to support ongoing projects while integrating MicroBioGen's operations into its global network.

The acquisition of MicroBioGen by Novonesis marks a significant consolidation in the industrial biotechnology landscape, promising accelerated innovation in yeast-based solutions. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the transaction is now pending customary regulatory approvals, including from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. This strategic union is poised to strengthen Novonesis' market leadership and expand the applications of advanced yeast technology globally.
