Canadian fintech company Neo has confirmed a workforce reduction affecting 102 employees, approximately 10 percent of its staff, across nearly every part of the organization. The decision was communicated in an internal message from Andrew, the company's chief executive officer and co-founder. The move is part of a broader effort to simplify operations and sharpen the company's strategic focus.

Scope of the Workforce Reduction

The layoffs reached nearly every function within the organization, reflecting a company-wide restructuring rather than a single department adjustment. Departing team members were informed in person wherever possible so they could receive the news directly from company leaders. The reduction represents one of the most difficult decisions in the company's history, according to the internal note.

Reasons Behind the Decision

Neo's chief executive said the company's rapid growth and attempt to build almost everything at once introduced complexity and slowed execution. Employees worked hard across too much ground, but the operational pace became a challenge for delivering world-class products. He took full accountability for the strategic direction that led to the restructuring.

A Sharper Operational Focus

The company emphasized that the change is not about shrinking its overall ambition but about becoming laser focused on what Canadians need. Neo plans to operate as a simpler and faster team with greater clarity of direction. The goal is to build fewer products faster and execute them exceptionally well.

Strategic Mission and Focus

Neo reaffirmed its mission to help every Canadian make real financial progress by improving daily money management, building credit, increasing savings, and unlocking homeownership. Starting immediately, the company said 100 percent of its energy will be directed toward that mission. The strategy is intended to align resources around the products and services that matter most to customers.

Support for Departing Employees

Affected employees are receiving severance packages, extended benefits coverage, and career transition support. Neo is also waiving the equity cliff for departing team members who have not yet reached it, a move intended to preserve their equity. The chief executive said he is personally making introductions across his professional network to help people secure their next opportunities.

Data Security and Immediate Offboarding

Following the conversations with departing staff, building access and IT systems were deactivated for departing employees. The company acknowledged that immediate offboarding can feel abrupt but said its strict policy requires this step. Because Neo handles sensitive personal data for millions of Canadians, it must follow strict security protocols when employees leave.

A Clearer Path Forward

For remaining employees, the message acknowledged that the day would not feel normal and encouraged them to take time to adjust. Leaders said the absence of departed colleagues will be felt across the organization. They also expressed confidence that the work ahead is clearer than it has been in a long time and that the remaining team will define Neo's future.

Neo's restructuring illustrates a broader trend among technology companies seeking greater efficiency after periods of rapid expansion. The company is betting that a simpler operating model and a sharper focus on core financial products will strengthen its ability to serve Canadians. While the immediate impact is difficult for affected employees, Neo expects the changes to accelerate delivery of its mission and long-term growth.
