Navion Neurosciences Closes $10.8 Million Seed Financing

Funding led by Angelini Lumira Biosciences Fund to advance precision sodium-channel medicines

Navion Neurosciences has secured a $10.8 million first closing of its Seed financing to advance precision medicines for neurological diseases. The round was led by the Angelini Lumira Biosciences Fund, with participation from 3B Future Health Fund, UVA LVG Seed Fund, Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation, VTC Innovation Fund, and Navion management. The funding will support programs in genetic epilepsy and chronic neuropathic pain while expanding the company’s AI-enabled discovery platform.


Advancing Precision Sodium-Channel Therapies

Navion is developing medicines designed to address pathological neuronal hyperexcitability, which contributes to uncontrolled seizures and persistent neuropathic pain. Its approach focuses on precisely modulating sodium channels involved in disease rather than broadly affecting sodium-channel activity, a limitation that can restrict the therapeutic window of conventional treatments. The company aims to use greater biological and pharmacological precision to develop therapies with improved effectiveness and tolerability for patients with difficult-to-treat neurological conditions.

The newly raised capital will primarily support Navion's lead programs targeting genetic forms of epilepsy and chronic neuropathic pain. Both therapeutic areas involve abnormal electrical signaling within neurons, making sodium-channel regulation an important potential treatment pathway. Navion intends to advance these programs while generating additional drug candidates through its broader discovery platform.

Expanding the NaViGATion Platform

A portion of the financing will also fund continued development of Navion's proprietary NaViGATion platform, which combines artificial intelligence, chemistry, structural biology, human disease biology, and ion-channel expertise. The platform is designed to identify and optimize differentiated compounds capable of selectively influencing disease-relevant sodium-channel activity. By integrating computational tools with experimental drug discovery, Navion plans to build a pipeline that extends beyond its initial epilepsy and pain programs.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Andrew J. Krouse said advances in human genetics and sodium-channel pharmacology are creating opportunities to design more targeted medicines for diseases driven by abnormal neuronal firing. He said the financing gives Navion resources to move its current programs forward while continuing to strengthen a platform capable of producing multiple therapeutic candidates. The company is drawing on its team's experience in ion-channel science, medicinal chemistry, neuroscience, and drug development as it progresses its pipeline.

Experienced Team and Investor Support

Navion's leadership includes professionals who previously helped build Cavion, a neurology-focused biotechnology company specializing in ion-channel therapeutics. Cavion was acquired by Jazz Pharmaceuticals in 2019, providing members of the current Navion team with prior experience developing and advancing neuroscience-focused drug programs. Navion is now applying that expertise to sodium-channel targets with the goal of producing more precisely designed neurological medicines.

Gerry Brunk, managing partner at Lumira Ventures, said Navion combines insights into disease biology with specialized sodium-channel pharmacology and an experienced scientific team. He also highlighted the company's use of advanced AI tools to accelerate drug discovery and generate new insights into potential therapeutic approaches. Lumira believes the platform could support both Navion's initial neurological programs and the development of a broader portfolio of precision sodium-channel medicines.

Building a Neurology Pipeline

Navion remains at the preclinical stage, meaning its therapeutic candidates have not yet progressed into human clinical testing. The financing represents an important step toward generating the experimental and development data required to move its most promising programs closer to clinical evaluation. The company operates from the Commonwealth Bio Accelerator in Charlottesville and is positioning its platform as a foundation for discovering therapies across diseases involving neuronal hyperexcitability.


The $10.8 million financing gives Navion additional resources to advance its epilepsy and neuropathic pain programs. It will also support further development of the company’s AI-enabled NaViGATion platform and broader precision sodium-channel pipeline. Navion will now focus on progressing its preclinical programs toward future clinical development.
