Navana.ai, a Mumbai-based voice AI startup, has raised INR 40 crore, or about $4.2 million, in a Series A funding round led by entrepreneur and investor Ronnie Screwvala. The round also saw participation from Antler India, Sharad Sanghi, Sandeep Singhal, and Paula Mariwala. The company plans to use the capital to deepen its presence in the BFSI sector and expand its Indic language speech models.
Series A Investment and Key Participants
The funding round was led by Ronnie Screwvala, cofounder of upGrad and an existing backer of the company. Antler India, entrepreneur Sharad Sanghi, investor Sandeep Singhal, and investor Paula Mariwala also participated in the round. This fresh capital infusion is expected to support Navana.ai's expansion across India's regulated enterprise segment.
Planned Use of Fresh Capital
The startup will deploy the fresh capital to scale its voice AI platform across banking, financial services and insurance enterprises. It will also invest in strengthening speech models for Indian languages and dialects and accelerate development of its AI Contact Centre and automated evaluation platform. These areas are central to meeting demand from regulated sectors that require high accuracy and data security.
Technology and Indic Language Capabilities
Founded in 2018 by brothers Raoul Nanavati and Jai Nanavati, Navana.ai has developed proprietary speech models covering 12 Indian languages and 45 dialects. The models are designed to handle real world conditions such as background noise, overlapping speech, code switching, and regional accents. The company has serviced more than 100 million voice AI minutes for BFSI clients including Bajaj Finserv, Protean, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, Jana Small Finance Bank, and Grihum Housing Finance.
Research Collaboration and Platform Benchmarking
Navana.ai has contributed to the open source ecosystem through collaborations with institutions such as IISc Bengaluru, IIT Madras, Microsoft Research, and the Gates Foundation. With IISc, the company open sourced RESPIN, a 10,000 hour speech corpus spanning 45 dialects that is among the largest openly available Indic speech datasets. The company also stated that its Bodhi voice AI platform achieved the highest accuracy in benchmarking against other Indian voice AI platforms using real world speech samples.
Founder and Investor Perspectives
Raoul Nanavati, cofounder and CEO, said the company's mission is to democratise digital access for every Indian irrespective of language or literacy. He noted that India has built critical digital rails such as identity, connectivity, and payments, and that meaningful automation will define the next decade. Ronnie Screwvala added that India's linguistic complexity requires specialised voice AI models that are regulator compliant and mindful of where customer data resides.
A Growing Voice AI Market
The investment comes as Indian startups increasingly pursue voice AI to extend digital services beyond English speaking and digitally literate users. Recent rounds in the segment include Smallest AI raising 13 million dollars and Ringg AI raising 15.5 million dollars to expand enterprise voice and messaging agents. Navana.ai positions itself within this competitive market by focusing on sovereign infrastructure and deep BFSI relationships.
The Series A round provides Navana.ai with resources to scale its voice AI platform among regulated Indian enterprises while advancing research and development for Indic speech models. The company's focus on data localisation, compliance, and language diversity aligns with the needs of BFSI institutions and India's broader digital inclusion agenda. As voice AI becomes a key layer of digital infrastructure, Navana.ai aims to remain a reliable partner for enterprises seeking secure and accurate automation.
