Mantle8, a French company pioneering natural hydrogen exploration, has successfully secured €31 million in a Series A funding round. This investment, led by Sandwater, is aimed at accelerating the company's mission to unlock commercially viable sources of clean energy. The new capital brings Mantle8's total funding to €37 million, positioning it for advanced global exploration.
Strategic Investment for Energy Innovation
The funding round attracted a consortium of prominent clean technology and sovereign-backed investors, underscoring the sector's growing appeal. Participants include Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Bpifrance's Ecotechnologies 2 fund, IP Group, Wind Capital, and Calderion. This diverse backing signals strong confidence in Mantle8's approach to developing a new, low-carbon energy resource.
Emmanuel Masini, founder and CEO of Mantle8, stated the investment reflects a growing conviction that natural hydrogen is a resource worth pursuing. He emphasized that while its existence is established, the key challenge lies in locating commercially viable accumulations. Masini expressed pride in the company's patented technology stack designed to meet this critical need.
Proprietary Technology to Unlock a New Energy Source
At the core of Mantle8's strategy is a suite of proprietary subsurface modeling and exploration technologies. Its multiphysics platform, HOREX®, produces 4D images of active underground hydrogen systems for unprecedented insight. The company's exploration framework identifies locations where hydrogen generation, replenishment, and containment converge.
This technological advantage is projected to lower production costs to as little as €0.80 per kilogram. Such a price point could fundamentally alter the economics of the clean hydrogen sector, making it a more competitive energy source. This innovation aims to unlock a sovereign, low-carbon energy supply that can be rapidly scaled.
A Clear Roadmap for Commercialization
The new capital will be deployed over the next two years to finance an ambitious global exploration and drilling campaign. Mantle8 will use its platform to identify and rank the most promising prospects within its development pipeline. These selected sites will then be drilled to confirm hydrogen accumulations and evaluate their commercial potential.
According to chairperson Bart Markus, the immediate focus is on proving that identified active hydrogen systems can deliver sustained, commercially viable flow. This crucial phase will bridge the gap between exploration and full-scale commercial development. The company maintains its goal of achieving commercial production by 2030.
Investor Confidence and Market Potential
Lead investor Tom Even Mortensen of Sandwater praised the Mantle8 team for its technical depth and clear commercialization plan. He noted that natural hydrogen aligns with Europe's goals for energy transition and resource sovereignty. Mortensen highlighted the company's potential to create a new clean energy source with significant impact.
This Series A round builds on a period of significant momentum for the company, founded in 2019. In 2025, Mantle8 raised a €3.4 million seed round and later completed the world's first 4D imaging of an active hydrogen system. The company also recently received a €2.06 million grant from the EU Just Transition Fund.
