cNGN, the regulated Naira-backed stablecoin, has officially launched on the Celo blockchain, marking a significant development for foreign exchange and cross-border payments in Nigeria. This integration, facilitated by the cross-chain liquidity network Textile FX, aims to connect a local digital asset with global stablecoin markets. The collaboration promises to offer a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional international transaction systems for businesses and individuals.

A Regulated Bridge to Global Liquidity

Issued by the private company WrappedCBDC, cNGN is a digital currency pegged one-for-one to the Nigerian Naira. The asset's reserves are held in Nigerian commercial banks and are also invested in secure instruments like treasury bills and money market funds. This backing structure is designed to maintain a stable value, providing a reliable digital representation of the national currency.

Crucially, cNGN operates under the supervision of Nigerian financial authorities, having participated in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Regulatory Incubation programme. WrappedCBDC was also included in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) anti-money laundering supervisory pilot, lending the stablecoin significant regulatory credibility. This oversight distinguishes cNGN in the digital asset space and fosters trust among institutional and retail users.

The Role of Textile FX and Early Traction

The launch on Celo is powered by Textile FX, a liquidity network that enables seamless swaps between cNGN and dollar-backed stablecoins like Tether’s USDT. This on-chain foreign exchange mechanism provides fintechs and payment companies with instant settlement capabilities. The platform's efficiency is a key factor in its appeal for businesses seeking to bypass the delays of conventional banking.

Ahead of its public launch, Textile FX has already demonstrated substantial market interest by onboarding 78 over-the-counter traders and cross-border payment firms in Nigeria. The network processed over $4 million in institutional trading volume in July, indicating strong initial demand for its services. As of early August, cNGN's circulating supply reached approximately ₦2.5 billion, with a cumulative trading volume of over ₦214 billion.

Celo's Expanding Stablecoin Ecosystem

This integration significantly expands Celo’s growing ecosystem, which now features 32 fiat-backed stablecoins from around the world. Markus Franke, Global Head of Stablecoins at Celo Core, emphasized that local currency stablecoins are a core focus for the network. He noted that the Celo network offers near-instant settlement with transaction costs that are a fraction of a cent.

To further enhance usability, Celo plans to initiate a governance process that would allow cNGN to be used for paying transaction fees on the network. This feature would make the stablecoin more practical for everyday transfers and merchant payments, deepening its integration into the ecosystem. Celo has an established presence in Nigeria, which is home to ecosystem applications like Opera’s MiniPay wallet.

Addressing Nigeria's Economic Landscape

The launch addresses a clear need within Nigeria’s digital economy, where stablecoins have gained immense popularity. Businesses and consumers increasingly turn to digital currencies for payments, remittances, and savings to circumvent the high costs and delays associated with traditional cross-border transfers. Nigeria ranks sixth globally in crypto adoption and accounts for a majority of stablecoin inflows into sub-Saharan Africa.

Uyoyo Ogedegbe, cNGN’s managing director, stated that Nigeria is leading global trends in stablecoin adoption and that the company's mission is to enable scalable, real-world use cases. The partnership with Celo extends this mission by connecting cNGN to a deep and active stablecoin ecosystem. This move is poised to unlock new opportunities for on-chain lending, decentralized finance, and everyday payments.

Ultimately, the launch of cNGN on the Celo blockchain represents a pivotal step in modernizing Nigeria's financial infrastructure. By combining regulatory compliance with the efficiency of blockchain technology, this initiative is set to streamline international trade and enhance financial access. The collaboration between cNGN, Celo, and Textile FX could serve as a powerful model for integrating local currencies into the global digital economy.
