Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based developer of the Kimi chatbot and Kimi K3 model, has confidentially filed for an initial public offering in Hong Kong, according to people familiar with the matter. The company submitted a confidential A1 application to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange this week, formally starting the listing process. The move signals accelerated fundraising ambitions as Chinese artificial intelligence firms compete more directly with leading developers in the United States.

IPO Timeline and Regulatory Path

People familiar with the discussions said Moonshot is targeting a Hong Kong listing as early as the first quarter of 2027, though the timetable remains subject to regulatory approvals and market conditions. The confidential filing allows the company to engage with regulators before public disclosure. Moonshot said it does not comment on market rumors or speculation when asked about the filing.

Funding and Valuation Ambitions

Before the planned listing, Moonshot is reported to be seeking a final private funding round at a pre-money valuation of about US$50 billion. That would follow a previous F round that raised more than US$3.5 billion and gave the company a post-money valuation of US$35 billion, according to Chinese media reports. The new financing could be the company’s last private capital raise before its public debut.

Kimi K3 and Commercial Expansion

Moonshot gained global attention in July with the release of Kimi K3, an open weight model with more than 2.8 trillion parameters. The company said the system delivered open frontier intelligence and performed well against some proprietary models from Anthropic and OpenAI on certain benchmarks. Kimi K3 has also been positioned as far cheaper than leading US models, giving Moonshot a price advantage.

Revenue Growth and Global Partnerships

Moonshot’s annual recurring revenue is expected to reach US$1 billion by the end of the year, driven partly by adoption of its developer platform. The company has also explored revenue sharing arrangements with overseas cloud providers including Amazon, Microsoft and Google, under which platforms could share up to 30 percent of revenue from services hosting Kimi K3. Such agreements would support the company’s international expansion.

Competitive IPO Landscape

Moonshot is not alone among Chinese artificial intelligence firms preparing for public listings. Rivals DeepSeek and StepFun have also been reported to be pursuing initial public offerings, while Zhipu and MiniMax listed in Hong Kong earlier in 2026. This wave reflects both rising investor interest and the need for substantial capital to support model development and computing infrastructure.

Challenges and Market Scrutiny

Despite rapid revenue growth, Moonshot continues to face significant costs associated with large-scale model training and inference. The company remains in a period of heavy capital expenditure, and profitability has not yet been established. Public market investors are expected to focus on the quality of commercial revenue, cost controls, and the path toward sustainable margins.

Moonshot AI’s confidential Hong Kong filing marks a pivotal step in its effort to fund further expansion and strengthen its position in the global artificial intelligence market. The planned listing, combined with a final private funding round at a reported US$50 billion valuation, reflects both opportunity and pressure in a capital-intensive industry. As regulatory and market conditions evolve, the company’s progress will be closely watched by investors and competitors alike.
