MAVI, an artificial intelligence-powered talent marketplace that connects U.S. companies with global accounting and finance professionals, emerged from stealth on Monday. The company, founded in 2023, says it can place AI-proficient, full-time candidates within days while handling cross-border employment details such as contracts, compliance, and payroll. The launch arrives as the U.S. accounting profession faces a shrinking workforce and a growing need for advanced technology skills that many existing professionals do not possess.

A Global Answer to a Domestic Shortage

The U.S. accounting industry is contracting, and many professionals who remain lack fluency in the AI tools that modern finance teams increasingly require. At the same time, many U.S. companies hesitate to engage global talent because of hiring complexity, compliance concerns, or doubts about quality. MAVI co-CEO Molly Liu argues that a new global workforce now offers standards equal to or better than those found domestically, and that the gap can be closed quickly.

An AI-Enabled Talent Marketplace

MAVI differentiates itself by emphasizing AI proficiency as a core screening criterion for accounting and finance professionals at mid-level and senior-tier positions. The company looks beyond technical credentials to assess judgment, reasoning ability, and familiarity with AI-native finance tools. This approach is designed to meet the needs of U.S. companies that want experienced talent without a lengthy hiring cycle.

Managing Operational Complexity

MAVI is designed to do more than simply match candidates with employers across borders. It manages cross-border contracts, legal and compliance requirements, and payroll for the talent it places in full-time positions. The company focuses on full-time, long-term placements that augment in-house finance teams, with an emphasis on mid-level and senior-level accounting and finance roles.

Why Automation Is Not Enough

Liu, who previously worked at Ramp, Lyft, and Dropbox, observed that automation alone cannot solve finance and accounting challenges, especially at higher levels of responsibility. She argues that AI will eliminate many entry-level roles, which will further aggravate the mid-level talent shortage as fewer junior professionals grow into senior positions. Even with more AI tools, companies still need experienced humans to make judgment calls on critical and often nuanced work.

A New Kind of Accounting Professional

The rise of AI is changing what it means to be an accountant, according to Liu. An AI-proficient accountant combines strong finance and accounting fundamentals with the ability to direct AI tools, catch errors, apply judgment, and integrate large language models into workflows. A traditional accountant may have core accounting knowledge but often has only a basic understanding of how AI fits into finance operations and how to manage AI tools effectively.

Funding and Early Traction

Last year, MAVI raised a US$4 million Seed round led by Harlem Capital, which the company did not disclose until Monday. The platform now includes more than 3,000 accounting professionals and enterprise clients such as personal care company Athena Club. Liu said the company is focused on high-skill talent and the new layer of judgment that finance teams need to operate at the next level, and that this focus will guide its future growth.

The launch of MAVI highlights a meaningful shift in how U.S. companies may address the accounting talent shortage, which has become a growing operational risk. By combining global talent access with AI proficiency and operational support, the company is positioning itself for a finance landscape that rewards judgment, adaptability, and technology fluency. Its early traction suggests that demand for this model is already materializing among enterprises that need experienced professionals quickly and reliably.
