Romanian AI startup Kyndred has secured a €500,000 Pre-Seed investment led by Early Game Ventures. Founded by serial entrepreneurs Alex Băraru and Rareș Moșescu, the company develops AI companions with a face, voice, and memory that respond in real time. The founders previously built Meditații.ro, an education platform with over €15 million in gross merchandise value.
A Relationship-Based Approach to AI
Kyndred positions its companions as an alternative to transaction-based assistants. Co-founder and CMO Alex Băraru said most AI characters today are simply text in a chat window. The company builds characters that respond in real time, remember what users tell them, and aim to help people become more organized and socially active.
From Education to AI Companions
The idea for Kyndred emerged from the founders’ previous business, Meditații.ro, an education platform they built without outside investors. They needed an AI teacher that did not exist on the market, so they created it themselves in six months. The experience convinced them that users need a consistent companion rather than dozens of separate AI agents.
Product and Early Traction
The company’s first AI companion, Maya, is available on iOS, Android, and desktop, and on PC it can run over other applications to keep users company. Three months after launch, Maya has more than 150 paying customers. Kyndred generated its first revenue through a pre-launch campaign after early animations attracted interest from the founders’ existing community.
Technology with a Human Feel
Kyndred’s technology combines real-time animation, expressive voice, and multi-level memory to make AI characters feel present. Co-founder and CEO Rareș Moșescu said an AI character is not a language model with an attached picture, and Maya speaks with tone and emotion while its animation, voice, and memory work together in real time. This combination is designed to create a stronger sense of companionship.
Investor Perspective
Early Game Ventures said Kyndred’s emphasis on ongoing relationships rather than single tasks was central to its investment decision. Partner Dan Călugăreanu explained that assistants depend on transactions, whereas companions rely on repeated and meaningful engagement. He added that the need for company is one of the most frequent reasons people open an app or device.
A Changing Interaction Paradigm
Early Game Ventures views Kyndred as part of a wider shift in digital interaction. Călugăreanu compared the transition from assistants to companions to earlier changes such as the move from command-line systems to graphical interfaces and the rise of smartphones. He argued that the most successful products are those that shorten the gap between what users want and what they can achieve.
Use of Funds
The Pre-Seed funding will be directed entirely toward accelerating product development, improving Maya, and creating additional AI companions. Kyndred also plans to grow its customer base, expand its team, and invest in product infrastructure and key early hires. The company is currently hiring an AI Engineer and a Product Engineer.
Kyndred’s Pre-Seed round highlights growing investor interest in AI companions that prioritize long-term user engagement over one-off tasks. With early paying customers and a clear product roadmap, the startup aims to reshape how people navigate an increasingly crowded AI environment. Its progress with Maya suggests that relationship-centered AI could become a meaningful category in consumer technology.
