Intrepid Growth Partners has formally launched with the final close of its inaugural US$525 million fund, establishing itself as a specialist growth investor dedicated to artificial intelligence. The firm was founded in 2023 by a team of institutional investment leaders and AI economists to back ambitious founders who are redefining their industries. With offices in Toronto and London, Intrepid has already deployed capital into nine portfolio companies.

A Global Mandate for AI Growth

Intrepid believes that the next generation of AI winners will emerge from multiple international ecosystems rather than any single market. The firm targets proven AI businesses that demonstrate commercial traction and have the potential to move beyond improving a single task. Its geographic focus spans the Canada-UK corridor, the United States, and Europe, where deep research and engineering talent is concentrated.

Institutional Backing

The first fund is supported by more than 80 global limited partners, including institutional investors and sovereign wealth funds. Notable backers include Temasek, Abu Dhabi Investment Council, British Business Bank, Export Development Canada, and Business Development Bank of Canada. Intrepid takes a high-conviction approach, providing growth capital, global networks, operational support, and a long-term perspective to help founders build global champions.

Investment Philosophy

Ajay Agrawal, co-founder and partner, noted that artificial intelligence makes prediction dramatically cheaper, increasing the value of judgment, proprietary data, distribution, and workflow redesign. Intrepid does not simply look for companies using AI to make an existing task faster. The firm seeks founders working toward a vision that exploits low-cost prediction to dramatically improve how critical goods are produced or services are delivered.

Founders and Advisory Network

Intrepid was co-founded by Mark Machin, former President and CEO of CPPIB, Mark Shulgan, former Head of Growth Equity at OMERS, and Ajay Agrawal, a University of Toronto professor and leading AI economist. The firm combines institutional investment experience with academic depth in artificial intelligence. Its advisory network includes Richard Sutton, a 2024 Turing Award winner and reinforcement learning pioneer, along with MIT professor Sendhil Mullainathan, former Royal Air Force chief Sir Mike Wigston, and Shopify President Harley Finkelstein.

Early Portfolio Momentum

Intrepid has already invested in nine portfolio companies, including London-based PhysicsX and Toronto-based StackAdapt. PhysicsX CEO Jacomo Corbo said the firm brings a deep understanding of AI together with global perspective and long-term conviction. The portfolio reflects an interest in companies applying machine intelligence to reshape physical industries and solve complex real-world problems.

Public and Institutional Endorsement

Government leaders have welcomed the launch. Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon noted that Intrepid's ability to attract international investment strengthens Canada's AI ecosystem and helps promising companies scale globally. UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said the commitment will help British founders turn big ideas into global businesses while creating jobs and investment.

Intrepid's launch signals a significant new capital commitment to AI founders across North America and Europe. The firm's cross-border model and specialist advisory network are designed to support companies through their next phase of growth. Its early investments and institutional backing illustrate growing confidence in AI's ability to transform established industries.
