IND Technology, an Australian startup specializing in early fault detection for power grids, has successfully secured USD$33.2 million in a significant funding round. Co-led by US venture funds Angeleno Group and Energy Impact Partners, the investment will fuel the global expansion of its fire-prevention technology. This capital injection marks a pivotal moment for the company as it aims to enhance grid resilience and safety internationally.


Pioneering Proactive Grid Maintenance

Founded in 2013 by RMIT Professor Alan Wong and Kokwai Leu, IND Technology emerged from the devastating 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. The catastrophe, caused by a faulty power line, inspired the development of a system to prevent such incidents from recurring. The company's mission is to transform how utilities manage infrastructure to protect communities.

The technology addresses the critical challenge of aging electrical infrastructure, which is increasingly strained by extreme weather events. It shifts the industry from reactive, calendar-based inspections to a proactive model that identifies potential failures before they escalate. This approach significantly reduces the risk of outages and catastrophic events like wildfires.

Innovative Fault Detection Technology

IND Technology's Early Fault Detection (EFD) system utilizes a network of sensors mounted on power poles, spaced up to five kilometers apart. These devices continuously monitor the grid, capturing unique radio-frequency signals emitted by stressed or failing electrical components. This allows for the detection of precursors to failure, such as arcing from a broken cable.

Once a signal is detected, machine-learning algorithms analyze the data in real-time to pinpoint the anomaly's location within 10 meters. This precision enables maintenance crews to be dispatched directly to the source for timely intervention. The result is improved grid reliability, lower operational costs, and a dramatic reduction in fire risk.

Global Expansion and Market Traction

The company has already achieved significant global traction, with approximately 15,000 EFD units sold across six countries. This deployment has reportedly prevented over 500 fire events, demonstrating the technology's real-world impact and effectiveness. Major US utilities like PPL Electric and PG&E have become key customers, embracing the system for grid resiliency.

Despite its Australian origins and successful local pilots, widespread commercial adoption in its home country has been slower. Professor Wong notes that while the technology was proven through numerous pilots, the company's primary growth is driven by North American and European markets. This highlights a common challenge for homegrown innovation seeking local commercialization.

Strategic Investment for Future Growth

The $50 million funding round represents IND Technology's first institutional investment, a major milestone for the startup. Co-led by climate tech specialists Angeleno Group and Energy Impact Partners, it includes Virescent Ventures and Edison International. This diverse investor base underscores global confidence in the company's solution and market potential.

This new capital will be strategically deployed to accelerate the company's global expansion and enhance its technological capabilities. Key priorities include scaling delivery and field support operations, particularly in North America and Europe. The funding will also expand the machine-learning team to refine the system's data interpretation abilities.
