Immitra Bio, a Zürich-based biotechnology firm, has successfully secured €2.58 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed financing round. The funding, led by Backbone Ventures and co-led by OCCIDENT, will advance the company's mission to develop scalable in-vivo gene editing therapies. This capital injection marks a significant step for the 2024-founded company as it aims to revolutionize treatments for genetic disorders.

A New Paradigm in Gene Editing

Current gene editing treatments often rely on complex ex-vivo methods that are costly and difficult to scale. These approaches typically involve extracting patient cells, editing them in a lab, and then reinfusing them after intensive conditioning regimens. This process presents significant logistical hurdles and limits the number of patients who can receive these potentially life-saving therapies.

Immitra Bio is pioneering an in-vivo alternative designed to overcome these challenges with a single, off-the-shelf injection. Their mutation-agnostic technology aims to treat all patients with a specific disease, regardless of their individual genetic mutation. This approach eliminates the need for chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and highly personalized manufacturing, promising a more accessible treatment model.

Strategic Allocation of Capital

The newly acquired capital will be primarily directed toward advancing the company's lead candidate, IB-003. This therapeutic is a potential one-time curative treatment for an inherited form of anemia. The funds will support crucial preclinical proof-of-concept studies to validate the platform's efficacy and safety in a therapeutic context.

Beyond the lead program, the financing will also fuel further discovery and validation work across Immitra Bio's broader pipeline. The company will leverage its digital target discovery platform to identify new therapeutic opportunities. This dual focus on a lead asset and platform development positions the company for sustained long-term growth and innovation.

Investor Confidence and Vision

Jan Nelis, CEO and co-founder of Immitra Bio, expressed that this financing enables critical value inflection points for the company. He emphasized the backing from a strong syndicate of specialist investors as a key endorsement of their novel approach. Nelis stated the ultimate goal is to make gene editing therapies commercially viable and widely accessible to patients in need.

Investors echoed this confidence, with representatives from Backbone Ventures and OCCIDENT highlighting the platform's potential to transform genetic medicine. They praised the founding team's scientific excellence and entrepreneurial experience, noting the technology's elegant design. The investors believe Immitra Bio's in-vivo, mutation-independent strategy directly addresses the major scalability and toxicity challenges facing the field today.

With its successful €2.58 million pre-seed round, Immitra Bio is well-positioned to challenge the current standards of genetic medicine. The company's focus on creating scalable, off-the-shelf in-vivo therapies could democratize access to curative treatments for a wide range of genetic diseases. This strategic funding accelerates the journey of its lead candidate and solidifies its foundation as a potential leader in next-generation therapeutics.
