Calgary-based payments company Helcim has successfully closed a $53 million CAD Series C funding round, significantly boosting its market valuation to $250 million CAD. The investment was led by the Business Development Bank of Canada's (BDC) Growth Venture Fund, signaling strong confidence in the company's mission. This new capital injection will fuel Helcim's expansion as it continues to support small and mid-sized businesses across North America.

Strategic Growth and Market Opportunity

This financing follows a period of impressive growth for Helcim, which has surpassed $150 million in annual recurring revenue. The company now serves over 22,000 active merchants and is on pace to process nearly $10 billion in annual payment volume. Its team has also expanded to 200 employees, reflecting its rapid scaling and increased market presence.

The funding arrives at a crucial time, as several of Canada's largest banks have divested from their merchant services divisions. This has created a significant void for businesses seeking a dedicated and modern payments partner. Helcim is strategically positioned to fill this gap with its commitment to transparent pricing, an open platform, and superior customer service.

Innovation Driving Adoption

A key driver of Helcim's success is its focus on technological innovation, highlighted by its recently launched AI-powered Payment Extension. This tool allows merchants to integrate Helcim's processing into their existing software, breaking free from restrictive embedded payment providers. The extension empowers businesses to choose their preferred processor without disrupting their established workflows.

Jack Fraser, a Partner at BDC Capital's Growth Venture Fund, noted that Helcim is experiencing a unique moment of rapid growth. He cited the AI integration tool as a prime example of the fast-moving innovation that BDC is backing. This technology is a clear indicator of the market demand that underpins the company's recent funding success.

Investor Confidence and Future Plans

The Series C round saw participation from new investors Curql Collective and Gold House Ventures, alongside continued support from existing backers. This diverse group of investors, including Headline and Aquiline, underscores broad confidence in Helcim's vision and its ability to execute. The financing brings the company's total equity raised since 2022 to $100 million.

According to CEO Nic Beique, the new capital will enable the company to act on market opportunities at scale. Helcim plans to enhance its payments platform, expand its team, and move further up-market to serve larger businesses. The company will also develop additional financial services to provide more comprehensive support for its merchants.

A key part of Helcim's strategy involves forming partnerships with regional banks and credit unions seeking modern payment solutions for their members. Nick Evens, CEO of Curql, praised Helcim's platform as the best available for this purpose. He emphasized its robust value proposition for credit unions aiming to retain and competitively serve their small business clients.

This $53 million CAD investment marks a pivotal milestone for Helcim, empowering it to accelerate its growth and solidify its market position. The company remains dedicated to its founding principles of fairness and transparency, aiming to become the most loved payments provider for businesses. With fresh capital and strong investor backing, Helcim is well-equipped to redefine the payments landscape for merchants in North America.
