Swedish MedTech startup Eyedentity has closed its first oversubscribed investment round, raising €1.3 million, or approximately SEK 15 million, to advance regulatory approval and expand its AI-powered diagnostics platform. The round was led by Norrsken Launcher, with participation from Karolinska Institutet Innovation and a group of angel investors. The financing will support product development, team growth, and preparations for wider deployment across opticians, eye clinics, and hospitals.
Funding and Investor Support
Eyedentity is building technology that analyzes fundus images already captured during routine eye examinations, with the aim of helping identify serious eye diseases earlier and improving referral decisions. Its first application focuses on uveal melanoma, a rare but potentially deadly eye cancer that can be difficult to distinguish from benign conditions at an early stage. By working with images that opticians already collect, the company is seeking to add diagnostic support without requiring new screening infrastructure or additional imaging equipment.
AI Diagnostics Through Existing Eye-Care Infrastructure
The company says its platform is designed to fit into existing clinical workflows, allowing opticians to upload fundus images for AI-assisted analysis and receive decision support on whether a patient should be referred to a specialist. Eyedentity says the system can reduce false-positive referrals by 90%, which could help specialist eye-care services focus resources on patients most likely to require further investigation. The model is intended to reduce unnecessary referrals while also limiting patient anxiety caused by suspicious but ultimately benign findings.
Pilot Program and Commercial Expansion
Eyedentity is currently running a live pilot with Synologen, a network of independent opticians in Sweden, as it prepares for broader commercialization. The startup plans to move from its initial Nordic rollout toward expansion across Europe and the United States, while developing integrations with medical record systems to make the process as seamless as possible for opticians. Management has said the longer-term goal is to create a workflow requiring minimal manual input while extending the platform to additional eye diseases.
Regulatory and Product Development Plans
The new capital will be used to work toward full regulatory approval for Eyedentity’s first product, strengthen its diagnostics capabilities, and expand the team ahead of commercial deployment. Beyond uveal melanoma, the company plans to apply its platform to conditions including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, with the broader ambition of supporting multiple clinical use cases. This strategy positions Eyedentity as a diagnostics platform rather than a single-disease solution, with potential applications across optometry, ophthalmology, and hospital care.
Founding Team and Innovation Ecosystem
Founded in 2025, Eyedentity was created by a team combining ophthalmology, machine learning, and company-building expertise. Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Gustav Stålhammar is an ocular oncologist at St. Erik Eye Hospital and a professor at Karolinska Institutet, while co-founder and CEO Mats Holmström is a machine learning engineer who previously worked at RaySearch Laboratories on AI applications in cancer care. Eyedentity is also part of the Karolinska Institutet Innovation Incubator, where the company gained access to business development, financing support, and investor connections.
Eyedentity’s €1.3 million round comes during a year of sustained European investment in AI-enabled diagnostics and adjacent MedTech, with funding flowing into medical imaging, respiratory diagnostics, neurodiagnostics, and other clinical technologies. The startup is now focused on converting its early pilot and existing clinical infrastructure strategy into a regulated commercial product that can be deployed across multiple care settings. If successful, Eyedentity could broaden access to AI-assisted eye diagnostics while helping clinicians prioritize referrals and identify serious conditions earlier.
