Nominal, a data infrastructure platform for engineering teams, has announced its acquisition of AI startup Fid Labs. This strategic purchase is the first since Nominal raised $80 million in a funding round that established its valuation above $1 billion. The integration aims to embed advanced AI capabilities directly into the hardware development and testing workflow.


A Strategic Move in Hardware AI

Many advanced hardware organizations struggle with inaccessible test data stored across proprietary formats, local drives, and disparate spreadsheets. Nominal was founded to address this challenge by creating a unified platform for capturing, storing, and analyzing hardware data. Adam Wolnikowski explained that his goal with Fid Labs was to accelerate hardware teams by integrating their tools in an AI-native fashion. He views Nominal as the ideal platform to achieve this at scale, citing its established product, customer base, and data layer. Wolnikowski believes his work will have an exponential impact within the Nominal ecosystem.

The Future of Engineering Workflows

Wolnikowski's first project will be an AI Analyst built natively into Nominal's platform to perform deep, contextual analysis. This tool is designed to automate the kind of complex data interpretation that currently requires hours of a senior engineer's time. The objective is to make high-level analysis faster and more accessible across engineering teams.

The company's long-term ambition is to embed AI throughout the entire engineering process, from analysis and monitoring to documentation. This requires domain-specific AI that understands the nuances of hardware, such as identifying meaningful deviations in a rocket's combustion profile. Such specialized intelligence is what sets Nominal's strategy apart from more generalized AI applications.

Market Context and Company Growth

Nominal serves a high-profile clientele that includes four of the five largest U.S. defense prime contractors and leaders in aerospace and fusion energy. The company has demonstrated significant momentum, growing its annual recurring revenue sevenfold in 2025. It now employs more than 150 people across several national and international offices.

This acquisition addresses a fundamental bottleneck in the industry, as the development of AI for physical systems has been slowed by a lack of data infrastructure. Hardware systems produce immense volumes of disconnected test data, unlike the well-established data tooling available to software teams. Nominal is building this critical infrastructure layer, and the Fid Labs acquisition accelerates its AI roadmap.
