Australian startup Grub Lab has secured $6 million in a Series A funding round to fuel its global expansion. Led by Bailador Technology Investments, the funding will help the company bring its innovative augmented reality (AR) kids' menus to the United States and United Kingdom. The platform aims to transform the family dining experience by making it more interactive and entertaining for children.
Revolutionizing the Kids' Menu Experience
Grub Lab is replacing traditional paper coloring sheets with dynamic, interactive experiences featuring major sports and entertainment brands. By scanning a QR code, children can access AR games, puzzles, and activities directly on a smartphone or tablet. This technology provides valuable entertainment for kids, giving parents a more peaceful and enjoyable meal.
The service delivers fresh, collectible, full-color menus to restaurants every two months, ensuring the content remains engaging. These menus integrate retail promotions and can be customized with the restaurant's own branding. This strategy creates a dynamic platform that encourages repeat family visits and builds customer loyalty.
Empowering Independent Restaurants
The company's solution arrives at a critical time for independent restaurants facing high costs and shifting consumer behavior. Mick Carr, CEO of Grub Lab, noted that parents are now purchasing an experience, not just a meal for their children. Grub Lab provides a tool for smaller operators to compete effectively for this experience-driven family traffic.
Designed with operators in mind, the platform is a simple plug-and-play system that requires no in-house marketing or design teams. Restaurants customize their menus through an easy-to-use online portal, and Grub Lab handles all printing and shipping. This effortless process allows staff to focus on service without any additional operational burdens.
A key advantage of the platform is its ability to provide smaller venues with access to high-profile intellectual property. Historically, partnerships with major leagues and studios were reserved for global fast-food giants. Grub Lab's scalable model democratizes these brand collaborations for local diners and regional chains.
Strategic Investment and Future Growth
The $6 million investment was led by Sydney-based growth equity fund Bailador Technology Investments. As part of the deal, Bailador partner Paul Wilson will join Grub Lab’s board of directors. Wilson praised the company as a fantastic example of Australian innovation addressing a real need in the global hospitality market.
With this new capital, Grub Lab plans to launch in the U.S. and U.K. in 2024, building on its success with over 1,000 venues in Australia and New Zealand. The company is also developing new products, including a white-label solution for custom branded AR experiences. This positions Grub Lab to capture a significant share of the rapidly growing AR market.
This strategic funding marks a significant milestone for Grub Lab, validating its mission to modernize the family dining sector. By blending technology with entertainment, the company offers a powerful tool for restaurants to increase loyalty and revenue. As it expands internationally, Grub Lab is well-positioned to become a global leader in AR-driven hospitality experiences.
