GATE Space Secures €6.3 Million from EIC Accelerator for Satellite Propulsion

Vienna-based satellite propulsion specialist GATE Space has successfully secured €6.3 million in a significant funding round from the European Commission’s highly competitive EIC Accelerator program. This strategic investment, a mix of grants and equity, is set to accelerate the industrialization of the company's advanced mobility solutions for satellites. The funding highlights the growing importance of in-orbit maneuverability for both commercial and defense applications in an increasingly crowded space environment.


Strategic Funding for In-Orbit Mobility

The EIC Accelerator is renowned as one of Europe's most selective deep-tech funding instruments, with an acceptance rate of just six percent in its latest round. GATE Space distinguished itself as the sole company from the space, aerospace, and defense sectors to be selected by the expert jury. This new capital, which brings the company's total funding to approximately $22 million, will directly support the expansion of its production capacity.

Powering Critical European Missions

A primary focus for the company is its contribution to BeaconSat, which is poised to become Austria’s first military satellite upon its launch in February 2027. This mission is tasked with the critical function of detecting and analyzing jamming and spoofing attacks on satellite navigation systems like GPS and Galileo. GATE Space’s propulsion hardware is integral to the satellite's ability to perform its security-focused objectives with precision in orbit.

Furthermore, GATE Space is a key technology provider for the ASTRAL mission, a pioneering project aiming for Europe’s first autonomous in-orbit refueling demonstration by 2028. Led by the space logistics company Orbit Fab with support from the European and UK Space Agencies, the mission will showcase critical capabilities for future space infrastructure. The company's propulsion systems will enable the complex rendezvous, docking, and propellant transfer maneuvers essential for the mission's success.

Navigating a Competitive Space Market

At the core of GATE Space's offerings are its chemical propulsion systems, including the flagship GATE Jetpack designed for the common ESPA-class satellites. The company differentiates itself from competitors focused on efficient but slow electric propulsion by providing rapid, high-thrust capabilities. These powerful systems are indispensable for time-sensitive operations such as emergency collision avoidance and swift docking with other spacecraft.

This strategic funding comes as the global satellite propulsion market is experiencing rapid expansion, with forecasts predicting growth from $11.05 billion in 2024 to over $23 billion by 2030. The surge is fueled by a rising demand for defense-oriented space systems and technologies that can ensure the resilience of space assets. GATE Space is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend by providing the foundational mobility required for next-generation satellite constellations.


This €6.3 million investment marks a pivotal milestone for GATE Space, providing a strong validation of its technology and commercial strategy from the European Commission. CEO Moritz Novak described the funding as an "extraordinary validation" that will significantly accelerate the company's growth and solidify its market position.
