Form Energy Raises $750 Million to Scale Iron-Air Battery Manufacturing

Form Energy, a developer of multi-day energy storage, has successfully closed a $750 million Series G funding round. This latest financing, led by T. Rowe Price, brings the company's total equity raised to over $2 billion. The capital will scale its West Virginia manufacturing facility to meet surging demand for its innovative iron-air batteries.


Addressing a Growing Energy Demand

For the first time in decades, U.S. electricity demand is rising, propelled by the expansion of AI data centers. These energy-intensive facilities are projected to consume approximately 20% of the nation's electricity by 2035. This surge creates an urgent need for new, reliable power storage solutions to maintain grid stability.

Form Energy's technology directly addresses this challenge with its long-duration storage capabilities. Unlike conventional batteries that discharge over a few hours, its iron-air systems can deliver power for 100 hours. This extended duration is crucial for bridging intermittency gaps from renewable sources like solar and wind.

Innovative Technology and Strategic Partnerships

The company's unique battery chemistry relies on iron, an abundant and low-cost material, instead of pricier minerals like lithium. The system operates by converting iron to rust during discharge and then reversing the process during charging. This cost-effective approach enables the storage of massive amounts of electricity for extended periods.

This technology has attracted significant commercial interest, with the company's backlog quadrupling to 80 gigawatt-hours this year. High-profile customers include Google, which is deploying a system for a new data center, as well as Crusoe and Xcel Energy. These partnerships underscore the market's confidence in Form Energy's multi-day storage solution.

Financial Backing and Manufacturing Expansion

The Series G round was led by existing investor T. Rowe Price and attracted new participants like Sequoia Capital and Franklin Templeton. Proceeds are earmarked to accelerate the scale-up of Form Energy's manufacturing plant in Weirton, West Virginia. This expansion is critical for fulfilling its growing commercial project pipeline.

A key strategic advantage is its domestic-focused supply chain, with 80% of materials sourced from the United States. This approach aligns with national efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese battery manufacturing and supply chains. It also enhances supply chain security for its U.S.-based customers and projects.

Strengthening Executive Leadership

To guide its next growth phase, Form Energy has expanded its executive team with two key appointments. Navneet Govil, formerly of SoftBank Investment Advisers, has joined as Chief Financial Officer to oversee financial strategy. His experience will be vital as the company manages its new capital and scales operations.

Wes Sloan has been appointed Chief Operating Officer, bringing leadership from the aerospace and energy sectors. His recent role at Panasonic Energy involved overseeing large-scale battery manufacturing, providing direct experience for scaling Form's production. These hires signal the company's focus on operational excellence and commercial execution.


With $750 million in new funding, a robust project backlog, and a strengthened leadership team, Form Energy is poised for significant expansion. The company's cost-effective, long-duration storage technology addresses the grid challenges posed by renewables and rising electricity demand. This investment solidifies its position as a key player in the global transition to a sustainable energy future.
