Fireflies has introduced Fireflies Talk, a free and unlimited voice dictation feature built into its desktop application for Mac and Windows. Users can hold a key, speak, and release it to place clean text wherever their cursor sits, including Gmail, Slack, documents, CRMs, and AI prompts. The launch expands Fireflies beyond meeting transcription toward broader workplace productivity.
How Fireflies Talk Works
Talk lives inside the Fireflies desktop app and requires no separate window or voice command training. A user clicks the target field, holds the Fn key on Mac or the Ctrl and Windows keys on a Windows machine, speaks, and releases the keys, after which the text appears exactly where the cursor sits. The experience is designed to feel as ordinary as a spellchecker while working across any desktop application.
Built-In Cleanup and Formatting
Fireflies Talk removes filler words, false starts, and other speech artifacts as it transcribes. For example, a spoken phrase such as 'um, yeah, so the report is, uh, basically done' becomes 'Yeah, the report is basically done.' The system preserves the speaker's meaning and does not add words that were not said.
The tool also adapts text to the context where it is entered, including email, Slack, and document formats. An email is formatted like an email, a Slack reply like a Slack reply, and a document line like standard document text. In Slack, saying a name can automatically create an @mention, which streamlines team communication without extra steps.
Language Support and Privacy
Fireflies Talk supports more than 90 languages, allowing users to dictate in the language they already speak. This broad coverage positions the feature as useful for global teams and multilingual workplaces. The company emphasized that the tool fits everyday speech rather than requiring special commands, new vocabulary, or lengthy training.
On privacy, Fireflies said all dictations remain stored locally on the user's device. The company does not keep a copy, and no one inside Fireflies or the user's workspace can view the content. The dictations are never used to train models, and the platform is SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant, according to the company.
Pricing and Company Positioning
Fireflies noted that standalone dictation applications typically charge between US$12 and US$15 per month for unlimited use. In contrast, Talk is included in every Fireflies plan, including the free tier, with no limit on how much a user can dictate. The company framed the decision as part of its broader AI teammate strategy rather than a separate product with a separate bill.
Fireflies began as a meeting notetaker and has grown into what the company calls an AI teammate for more than 20 million people who have used it. It now briefs users in the morning, takes meeting notes, drafts emails and reports, and updates CRM records. Talk is positioned as the next step toward reducing time lost to typing across all work applications.
The Speed Advantage
Fireflies also highlighted what it sees as a significant productivity gap between typing and speaking. The company said people type roughly 45 words per minute but speak about 150 words per minute. Once users experience that difference, returning to a keyboard for a two-line reply can start to feel inefficient and unnecessarily slow.
Fireflies Talk is available now through the Fireflies desktop app for Mac and Windows. The company invites users to install the app, hold the designated key, and speak to see text appear in any application. By bundling unlimited dictation into its existing free plan, Fireflies aims to make voice input a standard part of daily computer use rather than a premium add-on.
