The European Investment Bank (EIB) has agreed to provide €19 million in venture debt to Reactive Technologies, a power grid technology company founded in the United Kingdom and Finland. The financing will support the company’s GridVerix platform, which gives electricity grid operators real-time visibility into system stability, including inertia and voltage conditions. Backed by the InvestEU program, the operation also contributes to the EIB Group’s TechEU initiative and covers a material part of Reactive Technologies’ investment program.

Monitoring Grid Stability in Real Time

European electricity networks are becoming more complex as wind and solar capacity expands and large consumers such as data centers connect to the grid at a rapid pace. GridVerix measures key indicators of stability, including inertia, which is stored kinetic energy in generators that helps the system withstand sudden disturbances, as well as voltage strength and stability. These real-time measurements help operators spot vulnerabilities early, maintain reliable electricity supplies, and integrate more renewable energy.

Allocation and Financial Structure

Of the €19 million EIB loan, up to €7 million will support research and development activities at Reactive Technologies’ center in Oulu, Finland, while €12 million will support deployment of the technology across the European Union. The financing is structured as venture debt, a long-term funding instrument designed for innovative, high-growth companies that need additional capital. This approach provides capital without the same ownership dilution as raising equity, helping the company scale while preserving shareholder value.

Leadership Perspectives

EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer said Europe needs electricity grids that can keep pace with the rapid growth of renewable energy. He added that Reactive Technologies gives grid operators a much clearer picture of what is happening across their networks in real time. According to Nehammer, the financing will help bring this European technology to more markets, reduce the risk of power outages, and support the secure integration of more clean power.

Supporting Clean Energy and Lower Costs

By providing real-time measurements of grid stability, GridVerix can help operators integrate more wind and solar energy while reducing renewable curtailment, which is the deliberate reduction of electricity generation. This capability lowers grid operating costs and helps keep electricity costs down for consumers, even as large power users such as data centers place new demands on the system. Reactive Technologies Chief Executive Officer Marc Borrett said EIB support comes at a critical moment as grids become more complex to manage.

Strategic Alignment

The operation is backed by the InvestEU program and contributes to TechEU, the EIB Group initiative to accelerate investments in strategic technologies and strengthen Europe’s technological competitiveness. The financing covers a material part of Reactive Technologies’ investment program and supports the company’s growth across Europe. It also reinforces the EIB’s broader commitment to digital, clean energy, and grid modernization projects.

The EIB’s €19 million loan signals growing institutional support for digital grid technologies that address the operational challenges of the energy transition. By enabling real-time visibility into grid stability, Reactive Technologies can help utilities manage renewable energy integration, avoid outages, and contain costs for consumers. As European grids become more complex, investments in monitoring platforms such as GridVerix are likely to play a central role in maintaining reliability, reducing costs, and accelerating decarbonization.
