French biopharmaceutical quality control provider Clean Cells has acquired Anaquant, a Lyon-based specialist in mass spectrometry bioanalysis, to expand its analytical capabilities across drug development and manufacturing. The transaction gives Clean Cells full ownership of Anaquant’s brand, intellectual property, proprietary analytics platform, laboratory equipment, and client relationships. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Strategic Rationale
The deal strengthens Clean Cells’ ability to support protein characterization, an increasingly important component of biopharmaceutical quality control and regulatory preparation. By incorporating Anaquant’s standardized mass spectrometry methods, Clean Cells aims to make advanced protein analysis available earlier in development, when companies are establishing analytical strategies and generating evidence for future submissions. Clean Cells CEO Laurent Claisse said the acquisition adds scientific depth to the group while giving clients access to analytical capabilities that may previously have been difficult to obtain.
ReadyBeads Technology
A central asset in the transaction is Anaquant’s ReadyBeads technology, a proprietary reference-standard product line patented in 2017 for host cell protein profiling and targeted quantification. Host cell proteins are process-related impurities that can remain after biopharmaceutical manufacturing and must be identified, monitored, and controlled to protect product quality and support regulatory approval. The platform can be applied across monoclonal antibodies, phages, recombinant proteins, and viral vectors, including adeno-associated virus, lentivirus, and baculovirus programs.
Integrated Service Model
The acquisition is designed to create a more continuous analytical offering, extending from early-stage method development and validation through to good manufacturing practice testing and product release. Anaquant will contribute upstream expertise in protein characterization, while Clean Cells will provide the regulated infrastructure needed as client programs advance toward clinical development and regulatory submission. The combined model is intended to reduce handoffs between providers, improve continuity in analytical data, and give biopharmaceutical companies a single partner across critical development stages.
Leadership and Integration
Anaquant’s team will join Clean Cells, and founder and CEO Tanguy Fortin will continue to lead the protein analytics activity within the enlarged organization. Fortin said the combination will allow Anaquant’s mass spectrometry capabilities to move beyond research-stage projects by using Clean Cells’ GMP infrastructure and broader commercial reach. The integration also preserves Anaquant’s technical leadership while placing its platform within a larger quality control organization serving pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients.
Market Context
The transaction comes as regulators and drug developers place greater emphasis on comprehensive protein characterization and more rigorous host cell protein testing. Mass spectrometry is increasingly being used alongside conventional antibody-based methods such as ELISA to provide broader and more detailed analytical data, particularly for complex biologics and advanced therapies. Clean Cells’ majority shareholder, healthcare investment firm ARCHIMED, said Anaquant’s differentiated technology, recurring client base, and position in a growing market made the company a strong strategic fit.
