Cisco has announced its acquisition of Israeli cybersecurity firm Astrix Security in a deal valued at approximately $400 million. This strategic move is designed to address the growing security challenges posed by non-human identities and autonomous AI agents. The acquisition underscores Cisco's commitment to securing the rapidly evolving digital enterprise as AI adoption accelerates globally.

Addressing the New AI-Driven Attack Surface

The proliferation of AI agents is creating a new class of digital coworkers that, while boosting productivity, also introduces a significant attack surface. These agents operate at machine speed, accessing data and executing actions that can be exploited if left unsecured. Organizations are now facing a new category of high-impact, AI-accelerated risks that demand advanced security solutions.

This emerging threat landscape highlights a critical gap in organizational readiness for the agentic era. According to Cisco’s AI Readiness Index, only 24% of organizations can effectively control agent actions with proper monitoring and guardrails. This disparity between agent capability and security preparedness is what Cisco aims to resolve with this acquisition.

The Strategic Value of Astrix Security

Founded in 2021 by Israeli intelligence veterans Alon Jackson and Idan Gour, Astrix Security specializes in a critical cybersecurity blind spot. The company focuses on securing non-human identities such as API keys, service accounts, and OAuth tokens. Astrix recently raised a $45 million Series B round, bringing its total funding to $85 million before the acquisition.

Astrix's platform provides enterprises with comprehensive visibility and control over the connections between third-party and in-house applications. It enables the discovery, governance, and lifecycle management of all non-human identities within an organization. This helps prevent supply chain attacks and data leaks stemming from over-privileged or compromised machine identities.

Integration into the Cisco Security Ecosystem

Cisco plans to deeply integrate Astrix’s capabilities into its broader security platform, starting with Cisco Identity Intelligence. This will strengthen visibility and provide critical context across all identities, both human and non-human, within the Cisco Security Cloud. The goal is to create a unified view of an organization's entire identity fabric.

The integration will extend Cisco's Zero Trust architecture to the burgeoning agentic workforce. Astrix's technology will be embedded into solutions like Cisco Secure Access and Duo Identity and Access Management. This will empower customers to discover, authenticate, and authorize agentic identities while detecting and responding to threats in real time.

This combination leverages Cisco's extensive visibility across network, application, and infrastructure layers to understand agent behavior. This intelligence will feed into security information and event management systems like Splunk. The result is a unified view of agent activity, providing security teams with the context needed for machine-speed investigations.

The acquisition of Astrix Security marks a significant step for Cisco in addressing the next frontier of cybersecurity challenges. By integrating Astrix's specialized technology, Cisco is enhancing its ability to help customers safely navigate the complexities of an AI-driven world. This move solidifies Cisco's position as a comprehensive partner for enterprises looking to power, connect, and secure their AI initiatives.
