Paris- and Boston-based Bionyra Pharma has launched with a $165 million oversubscribed Series A financing to advance a pipeline of biologic medicines for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. The clinical-stage company is initially focusing on atopic dermatitis and inflammatory bowel disease, where patients may continue to experience inadequate disease control despite available therapies. Its debut combines a large inaugural financing with three antibody programmes that range from early clinical testing to investigational new drug-stage development.
Financing and Investor Backing
Jeito Capital and Sofinnova Partners co-led the round, with Arkin Bio, Sanofi Ventures, Sixty Degree Capital, Vives Partners and Apollo Health Ventures also participating. Sofinnova had previously seed-financed Bionyra and co-founded the company with Frédéric Marrache, a former Sanofi research and development executive who now serves as chief executive. The financing is intended to support parallel development of the company’s lead candidates and further expansion of its immunology and inflammation pipeline.
Pipeline and Technology
Bionyra is developing monoclonal and multispecific antibodies designed to modulate immune pathways linked to severe inflammatory disorders. Each named programme uses half-life extension engineering, which is intended to prolong the time a medicine remains active and could support less frequent dosing in chronic conditions. The company’s strategy centres on pairing relevant disease biology with clinical development plans designed to test whether its candidates can provide more durable control than existing approaches.
Lead Programmes
The most advanced candidate, BYN-002, is a TL1A monoclonal antibody being developed for inflammatory bowel disease and other indications associated with the pathway. A Phase 1 study in healthy participants has been fully enrolled, while a second programme, BYN-003, entered Phase 1 testing in April as a bispecific antibody targeting both TL1A and IL-23p19. The third named asset, BYN-001, is an IL-25 monoclonal antibody at the investigational new drug stage for atopic dermatitis and Type 2 inflammation.
Licensing Strategy
Bionyra obtained BYN-002 and BYN-003 from TrueLab Biopharmaceutical, securing exclusive worldwide rights outside Greater China to research, develop, manufacture and commercialise the candidates. TrueLab said its agreement with Bionyra could be worth up to $985 million through upfront, development, regulatory and commercial payments, in addition to royalties and a single-digit equity stake in Bionyra. The company separately licensed BYN-001 from NovaRock Biotherapeutics and is evaluating additional preclinical programmes, including assets from TrueLab.
Leadership and Next Steps
Marrache previously held the roles of vice president and executive global project head for clinical development in Sanofi’s Immunology and Inflammation Therapeutic Area. Following the financing, Jeito’s Mehdi Ainouche, Sofinnova’s Anta Gkelou, Arkin Bio’s Avital Adler and Sanofi Ventures’ Laia Crespo are set to join Bionyra’s board of directors. The appointments add investor representation as Bionyra advances its candidates through early clinical studies and develops its longer-term portfolio.
Bionyra enters the market at a time of sustained biotech investment in therapies for immune and inflammatory diseases, where durable responses remain a major development objective. Its immediate test will be translating a differentiated antibody pipeline and a substantial financing round into clinical evidence of safety and therapeutic benefit. With two programmes in Phase 1 testing, a third nearing the clinic and additional assets under consideration, the company is positioned to pursue validation across inflammatory bowel disease, atopic dermatitis and related conditions.
