Battery Smart, a leading battery-swapping network for electric vehicles, is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO). The company is expected to file its draft papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) around September or October. To manage the public issue, Battery Smart has appointed SBI Capital Markets as its lead merchant banker, signaling a significant step towards tapping the capital markets.

Strategic Growth and Financial Performance

The company is targeting an ambitious annual growth rate of 70-80% over the next three to five years. This expansion will be fueled by deeper penetration into existing urban markets and entry into new cities across the country. This strategic push reflects the company's confidence in its scalable business model and the growing demand for its services.

Financially, Battery Smart has demonstrated strong performance, having achieved operational break-even while continuing its expansion. Its operating revenue saw a 52% increase to approximately Rs 250 crore in FY25 from Rs 164 crore in the previous fiscal year. The company is backed by prominent investors, including Tiger Global and Blume Ventures, who have collectively invested around $192 million.

Operational Model and Market Reach

Founded by Pulkit Khurana and Siddharth Sikka, Battery Smart operates on an innovative battery-as-a-service model. This system allows commercial electric vehicle drivers to swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones in minutes, eliminating lengthy charging downtimes. The model effectively separates battery ownership from vehicle ownership, making EVs more affordable for drivers.

The company's rapid expansion is largely attributed to its franchise-led approach, with local entrepreneurs operating nearly 90% of its stations. This strategy enables Battery Smart to scale its network efficiently without incurring proportional increases in operational costs. The company currently manages over 1,500 swapping stations across more than 75 cities, serving a user base of nearly 100,000 drivers.

The Battery Swapping Market Landscape

Battery swapping is emerging as a crucial alternative to conventional charging, especially for high-utilization commercial vehicles. It addresses key barriers to EV adoption, such as high upfront battery costs, range anxiety, and limited charging infrastructure. This model provides a practical solution for drivers who cannot afford significant downtime during their workday.

The market potential for this technology in India is substantial, with projections indicating significant growth in the coming years. According to a study by IMARC Group, the Indian battery-swapping market is forecasted to expand from $48.13 million in 2025 to $517.92 million by 2034. This growth is driven by rising EV adoption and the increasing demand for faster refueling solutions.

Government Support and Future Outlook

The sector's development is further supported by a favorable policy environment from the Indian government. Initiatives such as NITI Aayog's battery-swapping framework are creating regulatory standards for interoperability and safety. This government push is expected to accelerate the growth and standardization of the battery-swapping ecosystem nationwide.

As India aims for 30% electric vehicle penetration by 2030, the role of battery-swapping infrastructure becomes increasingly critical. Battery Smart is well-positioned within this evolving landscape, operating alongside other key players in the electric mobility space. The company's planned IPO will likely provide the necessary capital to solidify its market leadership and expand its footprint.

Battery Smart's move towards an IPO marks a pivotal moment for the company and India's electric mobility sector. By leveraging a scalable franchise model and addressing the core challenges of EV adoption, the company is poised for significant growth. The public offering will enable it to capitalize on favorable market trends and supportive government policies, further accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation.
